What is Children’s Day (Bal Diwas)?

Read this short note aloud before the quiz so every child starts with the same facts.

In India, Children’s Day, also called Bal Diwas, is celebrated every year on 14 November. It is the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad, the city now called Prayagraj. He loved spending time with children, and they called him “Chacha Nehru” (Uncle Nehru).

Before 1964, India marked Children’s Day on 20 November, the same day as the United Nations’ Universal Children’s Day. After Nehru died on 27 May 1964, the date was moved to his birthday to honour him. The rest of the world still marks World Children’s Day on 20 November. On that date the UN adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

Children’s Day activities for school

Children’s Day works best when children do things, not just listen. These activities need little more than paper, pencils and a free period.

  • Teachers’ talent show. In many Indian schools, teachers perform a song, skit or dance for the pupils on Bal Diwas. Children love seeing the roles swapped.
  • “If I were Prime Minister” speeches. Give each child one minute to say one thing they would change for children in India.
  • Letter to my future self. Inspired by Nehru’s letters to Indira, children write a short letter to open when they finish school. Use our printable story paper for neat lines.
  • Child rights poster. Groups pick one right, such as the right to play or to learn, and draw a poster about it.
  • Paper rose craft. Make a paper rose in honour of Chacha Nehru. Our paper crafts for kids has simple folding ideas.
  • Games period. Finish with charades or a word game. Try our charades for kids list.

For a gentle talk afterwards, ask: “What does every child need to be happy and safe?” Write the answers on the board and link them to the rights in question 27.

How to run the quiz in class or at a party

This plan fits a 35 to 40 minute assembly or lesson.

  1. Share the story (5 minutes). Read the “What is Children’s Day” note above.
  2. Make teams. Teams of four, each named after something Nehru loved, such as Team Rose or Team Discovery.
  3. Play the easy round aloud (8 minutes). Teams write answers on scrap paper and hold them up together.
  4. Play the medium and hard rounds (15 minutes). Allow 30 seconds per question. For Classes 4 and 5, give three answer options.
  5. Mark as you go. Use this children’s day quiz with answers as your key: one point per correct answer.
  6. End with a cheer (5 minutes). Ask each team to share one new fact they learned about Chacha Nehru.

At a party: play the easy round as a quick-fire game, and let the winner choose the next game. For more question ideas, see our quiz questions for kids.

Adapting the children’s day quiz for kids of different ages

  • Ages 5 to 6: turn questions into picture choices. Show a rose, a lotus and a sunflower and ask which one Chacha Nehru wore.
  • Ages 7 to 9: give three spoken options for each question.
  • Ages 10 to 12: read the question only, and give a bonus point for one extra detail, such as the year a book was published.
  • Ages 13 and up: ask teams to put five events from Nehru’s life in the right order.
