About Children’s Day: the day at a glance
Here are the basic facts that go with these worksheets:
| When | 14 November every year in India. In 2026 it is on Saturday 14 November |
|---|---|
| Other name | Bal Diwas, which means “children’s day” in Hindi |
| Why this date | It is the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, born on 14 November 1889 |
| Symbol | The red rose, which Nehru often wore on his coat |
| World day | Universal Children’s Day, marked by the United Nations on 20 November |
| Main idea | Every child deserves love, care, safety, play and a good education |
Why is Children’s Day on 14 November?
Jawaharlal Nehru was born in Allahabad, now called Prayagraj, on 14 November 1889. He worked for India’s freedom with Mahatma Gandhi and was the first Prime Minister from 1947 until he died on 27 May 1964.
Nehru was known for his love of children. He believed children are the future of the nation and deserve a happy childhood and a good education. Children called him Chacha Nehru, and he often wore a fresh rose on his coat.
In 1954 the United Nations asked every country to keep a day for children, and India at first marked it on 20 November, the same date the UN later chose for Universal Children’s Day. After Nehru’s death in 1964, India decided to celebrate Children’s Day on his birthday instead, as a way to honour him. Since then, 14 November has been Bal Diwas across India.
What is in the Children’s Day activity pack?
Every activity uses the same list of 25 Children’s Day words, so children meet each word several times in different ways. The list is the heart of the pack: the word search hides it, the scramble mixes up 12 of the words, the bingo calls them out and the writing prompt asks children to use them.
- Word search: easy, medium and hard grids, with an answer key.
- Children’s Day bingo: as many cards as you need, plus caller cards to cut out and pull from a bag.
- Word scramble: unscramble the Children’s Day words, with a key.
- How many words can you make? Build small words from the letters of a big one.
- Acrostic poem: write a word or line for each letter of NEHRU.
- Writing prompt: “What would you do if you were the teacher for one day? Write about your plan.”
- Greeting card: a fold-up card that says “Happy Children’s Day!”
Children’s Day word search: three levels
The Children’s Day word search comes in easy, medium and hard grids, with 10, 14 and 18 words from the list. On the easy grid the words go across and down. On the medium grid they also go diagonally, and on the hard grid they go in every direction, even backwards.
The longest words are childrens and celebrate with 9 letters, and the shortest word is day with 3. “Children’s day” is split into childrens and day, because a grid cannot show an apostrophe or a space.
Children’s Day vocabulary: words to talk about
Talk about the words before children search for them. Here is every word with a simple meaning:

Children’s Day activities for kids to do with the worksheets

- Dream balloons: each child writes one dream for the future on a paper balloon, and the class makes a big balloon bunch on the wall.
- Teacher for one day: let a few children read their plan aloud.
- Bingo in class: play Children’s Day bingo, and ask the child who calls “Bingo!” to say what each word on the line means.
A note for teachers and parents
Children’s Day is a happy, non-religious day, so these activities suit every classroom and home. It is a good moment to talk gently about children’s rights, such as the right to learn, to play, to be safe and to be heard. Keep the tone light, and let children who do not yet read well do the card and the acrostic poem with a little help.
How to use these Children’s Day worksheets in five minutes
The worksheet maker works from the 25-word Children’s Day list, so whichever page you print uses the same words. Choose an activity, set the level and press Download PDF or Print, and press New puzzles for a fresh set. For a full lesson, start with the word search, read the story above aloud, then finish with the acrostic poem or the writing prompt. For older children, add our Children’s Day quiz with 30 questions and answers.
