Easy Chhath Puja drawing ideas, step by step

Drawing Chhath Puja scenes is a common school activity before the festival. Children can copy these pictures freehand, or follow the two easy guides below. Sketch lightly in pencil, then go over the lines with a black marker and colour.

How to draw the Chhath Puja sun over the river

  1. Draw a long, slightly wavy line across the middle of the page for the river bank.
  2. Draw a big half circle sitting on the water line: this is the setting (or rising) sun.
  3. Add straight rays all around the top of the sun, short and long one after the other.
  4. Under the sun, draw three or four wavy lines on the water for the reflection.
  5. Add two or three small “v” shapes in the sky for birds, and colour the sky orange and pink.

How to draw a soop with fruits

  1. Draw a wide U shape that is flat at the top: this is the bamboo soop basket.
  2. Draw criss-cross lines inside it to show the woven bamboo.
  3. Along the top, draw a banana (a long curved shape), a round coconut and two apples.
  4. Add a few small circles with ridges for thekua, and a small clay diya with a flame.
  5. Colour the soop light brown, the bananas yellow, the thekua golden brown and the flame orange.

Coloring tips for Chhath Puja coloring pages

  • Sunset and sunrise skies. For the evening arghya, use orange, red and purple. For the morning, try soft pink, yellow and light blue.
  • Traditional colours. Saris at Chhath are often yellow, orange or red. Sugarcane is green with darker rings, and thekua is golden brown.
  • Water. Colour the river light blue and add a few streaks of orange where the sun shines on it.
  • Diyas. Leave a small white space in each flame so it looks bright.

Turn the Chhath Puja coloring pages into an activity

  • Make a card. Fold an A4 sheet, glue the colored soop or sun page on the front and copy a message from our Chhath Puja wishes.
  • Put the days in order. Ask children which picture shows the evening arghya and which shows the morning one, then line them up.
  • Quiz time. Finish with a few easy questions from our Chhath Puja quiz.
  • Write about it. Older children can write a short paragraph using why Chhath Puja is celebrated as a guide.

An easy Chhath Puja drawing for small children

The easiest Chhath Puja drawing is the sun over the river. Draw a half circle near the middle of the page, three wavy lines under it for the water, and a soop with two bananas at the bottom. This easy version suits children from about five years old and takes ten to fifteen minutes.

  • Ages 4 to 5: color page 5, the sun rangoli, with big yellow and orange areas.
  • Ages 6 to 7: draw the sun over the river freehand, then compare it with page 1.
  • Ages 8 and up: copy the ghat from page 3 with the sugarcane canopy, then add diyas floating on the water.

Chhath Puja rangoli to color and copy

Page 5 is a Chhath Puja rangoli with a smiling sun, lotus flowers and diyas. Color it on paper first, then copy it at the doorway: a yellow and orange sun in the middle, pink lotus petals around it and a diya at four points. Flower petals work well if you have no rangoli powder.

Using Chhath Puja coloring pages in class: a note for teachers and parents

Chhath Puja is a festival of thanks to the Sun God, Surya, and to Chhathi Maiya, who is believed to protect children. It is celebrated mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Terai region of Nepal, and by families from these regions everywhere. These pages show the shared customs, the ghat, the soop, the diyas and the sun, and have no prayer text or images of gods, so they suit mixed classrooms. Chhath Puja 2026 runs from Friday 13 to Monday 16 November, so print the pages a week before.

Print the Chhath Puja coloring pages before Nahay Khay, the first day, so children can color one picture for each day of the festival.
