Cursive Q or 2 and q or g comparison worksheet with tracing rows, quilt and guilt word pairs and a sorting activity

These cursive Q worksheets teach one letter in depth: the capital Q, the lowercase q, the qu join and the words that use them, all drawn in Playwrite US Trad, the US school-style cursive used across PrintSheetLab. You get five free pages in US Letter and A4, a three-step guide for each form of the letter, and a close look at the two things that trip children up: a capital Q that looks like a 2 and a q that turns into a g. This page shows how to write cursive Q step by step.

Quick answer: To write a cursive Q, start just above the baseline on the left, swing up and over the top, come down the right side to the baseline, make a small loop and curve out to the right. For lowercase q, curve around like a c from the midline, swing up, slant below the baseline, loop forward and curve out.

How to write cursive Q, step by step

Cursive Q takes three moves in each form, and the figure shows them as a growing sequence: the dark part is already written and the accent part is the stroke you add next.

Cursive Q in three steps for the capital and three for the lowercase q, with start dots, numbers and arrows on handwriting lines

Capital Q

  1. Start low on the left. Put the pencil a little above the baseline and swing up the left side of the letter and over the top.
  2. Come down the right side. Curve down and slant toward the bottom left until you reach the baseline.
  3. Loop and curve out. Make a small loop at the bottom, cross back over the slant and curve out to the right. On its own the Q dips its tail just under the baseline; at the start of a word the tail runs along the baseline into the next letter.

The pencil never lifts. That first upward swing is the stroke handwriting programs call an overcurve, and Zaner-Bloser’s cursive letter groupings put capital Q with I and J as its overcurve capitals, so a child who can write one of those already knows how the Q begins.

Lowercase q

  1. Around like a c. Start on the midline, curve back and down around the bottom, and swing up to the midline again so the oval closes.
  2. Slant down. From the top of the oval, pull a straight line down past the baseline to the descender line.
  3. Loop forward. Turn at the bottom, come back up on the right of the line you just made, close the loop on the baseline and curve out to the right.

Lowercase q belongs to the downcurve letters with a, c, d, g and o in the same Zaner-Bloser grouping, because all six start with that c-shaped curve.

Why the cursive capital Q looks like a 2

The cursive capital Q looks like a 2 because most of its route is the same: over the top, down the right side, a long slant to the bottom left and back along the baseline. Put the two side by side in the same font and the overlap is easy to see.

Cursive Q: The number 2 next to a cursive capital Q with their shared route highlighted, plus labels for the lead-in stroke and the small loop that only the Q has
Number 2 Cursive capital Q
Where it starts A short hook near the top left Low on the left, a little above the baseline
First stroke Over the top to the right All the way up the left side, then over the top
Middle Long slant down to the bottom left The same long slant
Bottom A sharp corner, then a flat line along the baseline A small loop, then a curve along or just under the baseline
Joins the next letter? No Yes, as in Queen

So the fix for a Q that reads as a 2 is always one of two things: make the lead-in reach high up the left side, or turn the corner at the bottom into a real loop. The Q or 2 worksheet has rows that alternate Q and 2 so a child feels the difference in the hand.

q in cursive vs g: which way does the loop go?

In cursive, q and g start the same way and part ways below the baseline: the q loops forward and comes back up on the right of its slant, while the g loops back to the left.

Cursive q and g side by side with the descender loop highlighted, q looping forward and g looping back, and the word pairs quilt and guilt, quest and guest, quill and gill

If the backward loop of a g slips into a q, quilt reads as guilt. Practice the pairs in the figure out loud: say the word, write it, and check the loop. The cursive j and z also drop below the baseline, so their pages are good company for this one.

The qu join

The qu join is the one to practice most, because in English the letter Q is almost always followed immediately by U, as the Wikipedia list of exceptions explains. After its loop, the q ends on the baseline, so the u swings up from there with an ordinary upstroke. The capital Q joins in the same way: in Queen, the tail of the Q carries straight on into the u.

Q is also rare. It is the second least used letter in English after Z, at about 0.1% of letters in words, according to the Wikipedia article on Q. That is why a q gets so little practice in ordinary writing and why a separate page for it pays off.

Four Q mistakes, before and after

Four cursive Q mistakes are worth watching for: a backward loop on q, a capital Q drawn like an O, an open oval and a q that is not joined to its u.

Cursive Q: Four before and after pairs: a q with a backward loop that reads as g, a print-style Q, a q with an open oval and q and u written apart
  • Backward loop. Say “forward” as the pencil turns at the bottom, and check that the loop sits on the right of the slant.
  • Q like an O with a tail. Put a start dot just above the baseline on the left of each Q until the lead-in is automatic.
  • Open oval. The q has to swing back up to the midline before it slants down. Trace the a and d too, which close the same way.
  • q and u apart. Write qu as one unit, ten times in a row, before writing whole words.

Words to practice the cursive q

These common words keep the q in different places, so a child practices the plain qu start as well as the joins from s, e, a and i into q.

Word Where the q is Join to watch
queen start qu, then e to e
quiet start qu and ie
quilt start qu, then the tall l and t
quick start qu and ck
quiz start qu, then z dips below the baseline
quack start qu and a
squid second letter s into q
square second letter s into q, then ua
equal second letter e into q
aqua second letter a into q
liquid middle i into q and back to i
question start a long word for older writers

One Q lesson, minute by minute

Minutes Do Say out loud
0 to 1 Draw three big c-shapes and three overcurves in the air or on a whiteboard “Back and around”, “up and over”
1 to 4 One row from the lowercase q page “Around, slant, loop forward”
4 to 6 Two rows of qu and one of sq from the joins page “Close the loop, then up into u”
6 to 8 One row of capital Q “Start low, up and over, down, loop”
8 to 10 Three words from the list, written once each without tracing The word itself, slowly

Write on paper with a dashed midline so the oval stops at the right height. The handwriting paper by grade guide explains which line spacing suits which age, and the printable paper section has free sheets.

Practise cursive Q for a few minutes each day, and it will soon join smoothly with the letters around it.

Frequently asked questions

7 quick answers

Does the cursive capital Q join the next letter?

Yes. In the font used here, the capital Q ends with a curve along the baseline that runs straight into the next letter, as in Queen.

Why does my child’s capital Q look like a 2?

Usually the lead-in is too short, so the Q starts near the top like a 2, or the bottom loop has turned into a corner. Start lower and keep the loop.

Should lowercase q be taught before capital Q?

Usually, yes. Lowercase letters are used far more often, and Zaner-Bloser’s grade 3 book teaches all 26 lowercase letters before any capitals.

How is a q different from a g in cursive?

Both start with the same c-shaped curve and slant. Below the baseline, q loops forward and g loops back.

Does q always need a u after it?

Almost always in English. Wikipedia lists the exceptions, which are mostly words borrowed from other languages, such as qat.

Can I make a q worksheet with bigger letters?

Yes. The cursive worksheet maker set to q lets you choose small, medium or large letters and colored or gray lines.

How do you write a cursive lowercase q?

Curve around like a c from the midline and swing back up to close the oval, slant straight down past the baseline to the descender line, then loop forward, come back up on the right of the slant, close the loop on the baseline and curve out.
