The letter H sound
H says /h/, as in hat, horse, house and heart. It is just a puff of air with the mouth open; hold a tissue in front of the mouth and watch it move. H almost always comes at the start of a syllable, and it teams up with other letters to make new sounds: sh (ship), ch (chip), th (thumb) and wh (whale). In a few words, like hour and honest, h is silent.
H is for hat: letter H words for kids
Words that start with H: hat, horse, house, heart, hand, hen, hippo, hammer, helicopter, honey.
H inside or at the end: ship, chip, thumb, whale, fish, lunch.
The color page uses hat, horse, house and heart, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

How to write H and h
- Uppercase H: Two tall lines down, then a line across the middle to join them.
- Lowercase h: A tall line down, then back up to the middle and over a hump.
Uppercase H is two tall lines and a bridge across the middle. Lowercase h starts with a tall line, then goes back up halfway and over the hump, like a chair. Children sometimes mix h with n; remind them that h has a tall back, just like the h in their hands.
