Counting to 10 on a number line: seven stars counted one by one up to 7
Number line. Say each number as you point.

Quick answer: Counting to 10 worksheets teach children to count up to ten objects, write the numbers 1 to 10 and match each number to a group. This free set has 5 printable PDFs with answer keys for preschool and kindergarten. Updated October 2026.

About these counting to 10 worksheets

Counting up to 10 objects is the foundation of every other number skill. On these sheets the pictures are arranged in rows of five, which helps children keep track and starts to show that 7 is “5 and 2 more”.

  • Count and write: count the shapes and write how many.
  • Count and circle: choose the right number from three, good before children can write numbers.
  • Ten frames: count the counters in a ten frame, the same model used later for adding and subtracting.
  • Missing numbers: fill the gaps in number lines from 0 to 10.

Tips

  • Let children point to each picture as they count.
  • Ask “How many?” after counting; the last number said is the answer.
  • Use real objects first, then the worksheet.

Counting to 10 worksheets: what is in the set

There are 5 counting to 10 worksheets on this page, and every one has an answer key except for any cut-out games. The first two sets ask children to count and write, the next asks them to circle the right number, and the last two use ten frames and number sequences.

Worksheet What children do Standard
Count and Write to 10 Count the pictures in each box and write how many. K.CC.B.5
Count and Write to 10 (Set B) Eight more groups of pictures to count. K.CC.B.5
Count and Circle to 10 Count the pictures and circle the right number. K.CC.B.5
Ten Frame Counting to 10 Count the counters in each ten frame. K.CC.B.5
Missing Numbers 0 to 10 Fill in the missing numbers in each row. K.CC.B.5

Counting to 10: the stages of learning to count

Learning counting to 10 is not one skill but several, and children learn them in a fairly fixed order. This table shows the stages, with the standard from the Common Core standards for kindergarten counting and cardinality that goes with each one:

Stage What the child does Standard
Say the number names in order Rote counting: “one, two, three…” K.CC.A.1
Match one number to one object Touch each object once and say one number K.CC.B.4a
Know the last number is the total Answer “how many?” without recounting K.CC.B.4b
Count objects in a line or array Up to 20 things arranged in a line, rectangle or circle K.CC.B.5
Count scattered objects Up to 10 things in a scattered group K.CC.B.5
Write the numerals Write 0 to 20 and match them to quantities K.CC.A.3

The worksheets on this page help with stages 3 to 6. Stages 1 and 2 are best learned with real objects, songs and games. A child who cannot yet touch each object once needs more practice with counters, and not a worksheet.

Count and write worksheets: how to write the numerals 1 to 10

Count and write worksheets ask children to write a numeral after they count. Many children need a few weeks to write all ten numerals well, so it helps to say the strokes aloud. Here is each numeral with its word, the number of letters in the word and a simple way to remember how to write it:

Numeral Word Letters in the word How to write it On a ten frame
1 one 3 one straight line down 1 filled, 9 empty
2 two 3 a curve, a slant, then a line across 2 filled, 8 empty
3 three 5 two curves, one on top of the other 3 filled, 7 empty
4 four 4 down and across, then a line down 4 filled, 6 empty
5 five 4 a line down, a curve, then a hat on top 5 filled, 5 empty
6 six 3 a curve down into a loop 6 filled, 4 empty
7 seven 5 a line across, then a slant down 7 filled, 3 empty
8 eight 5 an S shape, then back up to close the top 8 filled, 2 empty
9 nine 4 a loop, then a line down 9 filled, 1 empty
10 ten 3 a 1 and a 0 side by side 10 filled, 0 empty

The count and write worksheets use rows of five pictures, so that children can see 7 as 5 and 2 more. The making 10 page uses the same idea of five and some more.

Counting worksheets preschool: what to expect at each age

Counting worksheets preschool children use should be short and playful. Children grow at different rates, so the ages below are only a guide, but they show why counting to 10 is a good target for the end of preschool:

Counting to 10 with ten frames from 1 to 10
Ten frames. Fill the top row first.
Typical age What children can do What helps
About 2 to 3 Says some number words, often out of order Counting songs and finger rhymes
About 3 to 4 Counts 3 or 4 objects, touching each one Counting stairs, toys and snacks
About 4 to 5 Counts to 10, and knows the last number is the total Counting to 10 worksheets with rows of five
About 5 to 6 Counts to 20 and beyond, and writes numerals Counting to 20 and the hundreds chart

Count and circle worksheets: why the choices are close

On a count and circle worksheet the child counts the pictures and circles the right number from three choices. The choices are the number, one less and one more, so that a child who is off by one picks a wrong answer and can see the mistake. This table shows four examples:

Number of stars The three choices on a count and circle worksheet Why the choices are close
4 3, 4, 5 a child who is off by one picks a neighbor
6 5, 6, 7 a child who is off by one picks a neighbor
7 6, 7, 8 a child who is off by one picks a neighbor
9 8, 9, 10 a child who is off by one picks a neighbor

These worksheets are good before children can write numerals, since the child only has to recognize the number. They also show how well the child can count: if the child circles a neighbor again and again, they are probably skipping or repeating an object.

Number 1-10 worksheets: ten frames show every number

Number 1-10 worksheets with ten frames show each number as filled and empty spaces. The top row holds five, so a child can see that 8 is a full row and 3 more, and that 2 spaces are empty. The diagram on this page shows every frame from 1 to 10. Children who see the frames often begin to recognize small numbers at a glance, a skill called subitizing, and this makes counting faster. You can print blank frames from the ten frame tool.

Common mistakes when counting to 10

Most mistakes in counting to 10 come from a small number of causes. This table shows what each one looks like and what helps:

What the child does What it looks like What helps
Skips one object The total is one too small Touch and move each object into a “counted” pile
Counts one object twice The total is one too big Cross out each picture as it is counted
Says the number names out of order The count loses its meaning Sing and chant the numbers before counting objects
Counts again when asked “how many?” The child does not yet know the last number is the total Ask “how many?” each time and let the child say the last number
Reverses a numeral A 6 or 9 is written the wrong way round Trace the numerals, and say the strokes aloud

Counting to 10 word problems

Counting stories show that counting to 10 answers real questions. Ask children to point to each thing as they count and to say the answer in a full sentence:

Word problem Working Answer
Mia has 5 red balloons. How many balloons does she have? count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 5 balloons
There are 7 ducks on a pond. How many ducks are there? count 1 to 7 7 ducks
Leo puts 4 blocks in a tower. How many blocks? count 1 to 4 4 blocks
A box has 9 crayons. How many crayons are there? count 1 to 9 9 crayons
There are 10 fingers on two hands. How many fingers? count 1 to 10 10 fingers
Ana has 6 stickers. How many stickers does she have? count 1 to 6 6 stickers

Games and activities for counting to 10

Children learn counting to 10 best when they play with it. These games use things that are found at home or in a classroom:

Counting to 10: count the stars and circle the right number, for 4, 7 and 9
Count and circle. Choose the right number.
  • Count the stairs: count the steps as you climb, and count the toys as you tidy up
  • Snack counting: give a child a handful of raisins and ask “how many?” before they eat them
  • Fingers and toes: count 10 fingers, then 10 toes, and show that each is 10
  • Hopscotch to 10: draw a hopscotch grid with the numbers 1 to 10, and say each number as you hop
  • Dice and counters: roll a die, count out that many counters, and say the total
  • I spy numbers: find the number 4 on a door, a clock or a license plate

Extra support and extra challenge with counting to 10

For children who need more support: go back to real objects. Use no more than 5 things at first, line them up and let the child move each one as they count. Keep the pictures in rows of five, and use the ten frame worksheets after the child can count a row. Praise the process (“you touched each one”) as well as the answer.

For children who need more challenge: ask the child to count backwards from 10, to say the number that comes after 7 without counting from 1, and to find two numbers that make 10. The missing numbers worksheet asks for the number that comes before and after each gap.

How to tell that a child is ready to move on from counting to 10

  1. The child counts 10 objects in a row, touching each object once.
  2. The child says “there are seven” and does not need to count again.
  3. The child writes the numerals 1 to 10 with few reversals.
  4. The child circles the right number on the count and circle worksheet at least 9 times out of 10.

When all four are true, move on to counting to 20, where the teen numbers begin. Many children are ready for it after 4 to 6 weeks of practice with the worksheets on this page.

A five-day plan for counting to 10

Most children need about a week of short sessions for counting to 10. This plan follows the order of the worksheets on this page:

Day What to do Practice
Day 1 Count real objects to 5, touching each one 3 groups
Day 2 Count and circle to 10 8 pictures
Day 3 Count and write 1 to 10 8 groups
Day 4 Ten frames: count the counters 10 frames
Day 5 Missing numbers 0 to 10 and a counting game 1 worksheet

When the plan is complete, move on to counting to 20 or to addition within 10. The whole sequence is on the counting worksheets page, and the Common Core standards for grade 1 number and operations in base ten describe the next steps for grade 1.

Frequently asked questions

6 quick answers

What should a child know before counting to 10?

They should be able to say the numbers 1 to 10 in order. Matching one number to each object comes with practice, which these worksheets give.

Why are the pictures in rows of five?

Rows of five make counting easier to check and help children see numbers as five and some more, which helps with adding later.

How long does it take to learn counting to 10?

Most children learn counting to 10 over several months, from about the age of 3 to 5. The worksheets can be used in a few weeks once a child can count objects in a row, and short daily sessions of 5 to 10 minutes work best.

Should preschool children write the numerals?

Writing numerals is not needed for counting, so children can circle or point at first. Many children are ready to write numerals at around the age of 5, and the count and write worksheets are made for that stage.

Why are pictures arranged in rows of five?

Rows of five make counting easier to check and help children to see numbers as five and some more. This is the first step towards adding and making 10.
