Rounding to the nearest 10 means replacing a number with the multiple of ten that is closest to it, such as 43 with 40, or 47 with 50. The five PDFs on this page have rounding hills, tables for 2-digit and 3-digit numbers, a color-by-rounding picture and a riddle, and every sheet has an answer key. They follow standard 3.NBT.A.1 of the Common Core standards for grade 3 number and operations in base ten, and the notes below show the rule, the numbers that round to each ten and what happens when a 9 rounds up.

Rounding to the nearest 10: two rounding hills showing 43 rounding down to 40 and 47 rounding up to 50
Rounding hills. 43 rolls down, 47 rolls up.

How to round to the nearest ten

Look at the ones digit. If it is 0 to 4, the number rounds down to the ten below. If it is 5 to 9, it rounds up to the next ten. The tens digit either stays the same or goes up by one, and the ones become 0.

Number Ones digit Rounded
63 3, round down 60
68 8, round up 70
65 5, round up 70
497 7, round up 500

The last row is the one that surprises children: rounding 497 up to the next ten means 49 tens become 50 tens, which is 500.

Rounding to the nearest 10 worksheets: the one rule

The rounding to the nearest 10 worksheets use a single rule: look at the ones digit. If it is 0 to 4, the number goes down to the ten below, and if it is 5 to 9, it goes up to the next ten. Wikipedia’s article on rounding explains the rule and why halfway numbers round up. This table shows the three cases:

Ones digit What happens Why Examples
0 the number stays the same it is already a multiple of ten 40 → 40, 70 → 70
1, 2, 3, 4 round down to the ten below the number is closer to the ten below 43 → 40, 62 → 60, 114 → 110
5, 6, 7, 8, 9 round up to the next ten the number is halfway or closer to the ten above 45 → 50, 47 → 50, 99 → 100

A rounded number always ends in a zero. A child who writes 62 for the rounded value of 62 has not finished, since 62 is not a multiple of ten. The tens and ones page explains the tens and ones that the rule uses.

Round to the nearest ten: which numbers round to each ten?

When children round to the nearest ten, they can ask the question the other way round: which numbers round to 40? The answer is the ten numbers from 35 to 44, which are the 5 numbers below 40, 40 itself and the 4 numbers above. This table shows the ten numbers for each ten from 10 to 100:

Rounds to Smallest number Biggest number How many numbers The numbers
10 5 14 10 5 to 14
20 15 24 10 15 to 24
30 25 34 10 25 to 34
40 35 44 10 35 to 44
50 45 54 10 45 to 54
60 55 64 10 55 to 64
70 65 74 10 65 to 74
80 75 84 10 75 to 84
90 85 94 10 85 to 94
100 95 104 10 95 to 104

Every ten has the same number of numbers that round to it, which is 10. The halfway number, such as 35, is the first to round up. The diagram above shows 35 to 44 in green. The number line tool shows the same idea on a line.

Rounding hill worksheet: down, up and halfway

The rounding hill worksheet draws a hill between two tens, with the halfway number at the top. A number on the left side of the hill rolls down to the left, and a number on the right side rolls down to the right. The number at the top, 45, is the one that could go either way, and by the rule it goes up. This table shows eight numbers, with the steps to the ten below and the ten above:

Number Steps down to the ten below Steps up to the ten above Which is closer Rounds to
43 3 7 the ten below 40
47 7 3 the ten above 50
45 5 5 both are the same: round up 50
61 1 9 the ten below 60
78 8 2 the ten above 80
52 2 8 the ten below 50
84 4 6 the ten below 80
95 5 5 both are the same: round up 100

The number with the fewer steps wins. For 43, it is 3 steps down against 7 steps up, so it rolls down to 40. The 45 is 5 steps from each side, so the convention is to round up. The sheet shows each hill with a ball, and children draw an arrow in the direction that the ball rolls.

Rounding worksheets 3rd grade: how often does each case happen?

For rounding worksheets 3rd grade, it helps to know how the 90 two-digit numbers divide up. This table counts them:

Two-digit numbers (10 to 99) How many Share Examples
Round down (ones digit 1 to 4) 36 40% 12, 33, 74
Stay the same (ones digit 0) 9 10% 10, 50, 90
Round up (ones digit 5 to 9) 45 50% 15, 47, 99
Round up to 100 (95 to 99) 5 5.6% 95, 97, 99

Exactly half of the two-digit numbers round up, since five of the ten ones digits (5 to 9) round up, four (1 to 4) round down and one (0) stays. The numbers 95 to 99 are special, since they round up to 100, which has three digits. On average the rounded number is 2.5 away from the original, and never more than 5.

Rounding 2 digit numbers and 3 digit numbers

When rounding 2 digit numbers, the tens digit changes only when the number rounds up. When rounding 3-digit numbers to the nearest ten, the hundreds digit can change too, as in 497, which rounds to 500. This table shows seven 3-digit numbers:

Rounding to the nearest 10: the halfway numbers 35, 45 and 65 round up and the numbers just below round down
Halfway rounds up. 35, 45 and 65 round up.
3-digit number Ones digit Round Rounded What changes
362 2 down 360 the ones digit becomes 0
497 7 up 500 the hundreds digit changes too
805 5 up 810 the tens digit goes up by 1, and the ones digit becomes 0
650 0 stay 650 nothing changes
999 9 up 1000 the hundreds digit changes too
124 4 down 120 the ones digit becomes 0
575 5 up 580 the tens digit goes up by 1, and the ones digit becomes 0

Among the 900 three-digit numbers, 45 change their hundreds digit when they are rounded to the nearest ten. They are the numbers ending in 95 to 99, such as 497, 595 and 999. The reason is that 497 is 49 tens and 7 ones, and rounding up gives 50 tens, which is 500. This is the case that surprises children the most.

Where rounding to the nearest 10 is used

Rounding is a skill that people use all the time, usually without noticing. This table shows five uses:

Where it is used How Example
Prices round to the nearest 10¢ or dollar to check a total $4.47 is about $4.50
Distances 43 miles is about 40 miles road signs and trip plans
Crowds 47 people is about 50 people quick counts
Time 43 minutes is about 40 minutes planning a day
Scores 78 points is about 80 points comparing results

A rounded number is easier to remember, add and compare, and it is the basis for the estimates on the estimating with rounding page. The rounding calculator checks any answer.

Common mistakes with rounding to the nearest 10

The most common mistake is to round the halfway number down. This table shows five mistakes, what went wrong and the fix:

What the child writes or says What went wrong The fix
45 rounds to 40 thinks that 45 is “in the middle, so it stays below” halfway rounds up: 45 → 50
43 rounds to 50 rounds up because the number has a 4 the ones digit 3 is below 5, so round down: 40
497 rounds to 400 changes only the tens and forgets the carry 497 is 49 tens and 7 ones, so it rounds up to 50 tens = 500
95 rounds to 90 looks at the tens digit look at the ones digit 5, so round up: 100
62 rounds to 62 does not change the ones digit to 0 a rounded number ends in 0: 62 → 60

Rounding to the nearest 10 word problems

Rounding comes up in counts, lengths and scores. Ask children to circle the ones digit, to say which ten is closer, and to write the rounded number:

Word problem Working Answer
A bus has 43 children on it. About how many is that, to the nearest ten? ones digit 3, round down 40 children
A shop sells 47 apples. About how many is that, to the nearest ten? ones digit 7, round up 50 apples
A trail is 65 meters long. What is its length to the nearest ten? ones digit 5, round up 70 meters
A book has 497 pages. What is that to the nearest ten? ones digit 7, round up 500 pages
Mia scored 78 points. Round her score to the nearest ten. ones digit 8, round up 80 points
A tank holds 94 liters. What is that to the nearest ten? ones digit 4, round down 90 liters

Games and activities for rounding to the nearest 10

Children learn rounding to the nearest 10 best when they play with it. These games use things that are found at home or in a classroom:

  • Human number line: stand in a line from 40 to 50, and have each child decide which ten to walk to
  • Rounding hill race: roll two dice for a 2-digit number, and say where the ball rolls
  • Round and match: match number cards with the rounded numbers
  • Closest ten: pick a card, and write the closest ten on a whiteboard
  • Rounding bingo: a bingo card with tens, and calling cards with numbers to round
  • Color by rounding: solve the heart picture on this page, and color by the key

Extra support and extra challenge with rounding to the nearest 10

For children who need more support: use a number line or the rounding hill for every number, and mark the two tens that the number is between. Say the ones digit aloud, and check whether it is less than 5. Start with numbers where the answer is clear, such as 32 and 78, and add 45 and 95 later. Use the answer key to check each hill.

For children who need more challenge: ask for all the numbers that round to 70, for the smallest 3-digit number that rounds to 500, and for a number that rounds to 100 and has two digits. The sheet with 3-digit numbers, such as 497, and the riddle are good challenges.

How to tell that a child is ready to move on from rounding to the nearest 10

Before moving on from rounding to the nearest 10, check that the child can do all four of these things:

Rounding to the nearest 10: the ten numbers from 35 to 44 that round to 40
Numbers that round to 40. 35 to 44.
  1. The child finds the ten below and the ten above a number.
  2. The child looks at the ones digit and decides which way to round.
  3. The child rounds halfway numbers such as 45 up.
  4. The child rounds a 3-digit number such as 497 to 500.

When all four are true, move on to the rounding to the nearest 100 page.

A 20-minute lesson on rounding to the nearest 10

A short lesson is the best way to introduce rounding to the nearest 10. This 20-minute plan can be used in a classroom, at a tutoring session or at home, and it uses the worksheets at the end:

Minutes Activity What to say or ask
0 to 3 Show a number line from 40 to 50 and mark 43 Which ten is 43 closer to?
3 to 8 Draw a hill, and put 43 and 47 on it Which way does the ball roll?
8 to 13 Look at 45, the top of the hill Where does it roll, by the rule?
13 to 18 Round 497 to the nearest ten Why does the hundreds digit change?
18 to 20 Start a worksheet and check one answer Look at the ones digit.

Where rounding to the nearest 10 fits across the grades

No skill stands alone. This table shows what children learn before and after rounding to the nearest 10, with the standard that goes with each step:

Grade What children do Standard or page
Grade 1 Count by tens, and tens and ones 1.NBT.B.2 and 1.NBT.C.5, see the page on tens and ones
Grade 2 Hundreds, tens and ones 2.NBT.A.1, see the page on hundreds tens and ones
Grade 3 Round to the nearest 10 or 100 3.NBT.A.1, this page
Grade 3 Estimate sums and differences by rounding 3.OA.D.8, see the page on estimating with rounding
Grade 4 Round multi-digit numbers to any place 4.NBT.A.3, see the page on rounding large numbers

This page is the first of the rounding pages. The whole sequence is on the rounding worksheets page.

Helping at home with rounding to the nearest 10

Parents do not need to be experts to help with rounding to the nearest 10. These suggestions work well, and each takes only a few minutes:

  • Round the price of an item to the nearest ten, and check the total.
  • Ask “which ten is it closer to?” when you see a number on a sign.
  • Use a ruler or a tape measure as a number line.
  • Play “halfway”: say 35, 45 and 65 and ask where they round.
  • Check the answers with the answer key, and ask the child to explain one.

How to check progress in rounding to the nearest 10

A teacher or parent can check progress in rounding to the nearest 10 with the answer key and a few questions. This table shows three common situations, what they mean and what to do next:

What you see What it means What to do next
The child rounds the halfway numbers down The convention that halfway rounds up is not yet known Show the hill, and say “5 rounds up”
The child gets 9 of 10 right in every set Rounding to the nearest 10 is secure Move on to rounding to the nearest 100
The child looks at the tens digit The place to look at is not yet clear Underline the digit in the place, and circle the digit to its right

A five-day plan for rounding to the nearest 10

Most children need about a week of short sessions for rounding to the nearest 10. This plan follows the order of the worksheets on this page:

Day What to do Practice
Day 1 Find the ten below and the ten above a number on a number line Rounding Hills: Nearest 10
Day 2 Round 2-digit numbers, and say the ones digit first Round 2-Digit Numbers to the Nearest 10
Day 3 Round 3-digit numbers, including ones like 497 Round 3-Digit Numbers to the Nearest 10
Day 4 Color by rounding Color by Rounding: Heart
Day 5 Solve the rounding riddle, and a mixed review Rounding Riddle: Nearest 10

When the plan for rounding to the nearest 10 is complete, move on to the rounding to the nearest 100 page. The whole sequence is on the rounding worksheets page.

Frequently asked questions

5 quick answers

What does 95 round to?

100. The ones digit is 5, so round up: 9 tens become 10 tens, which is 100.

Can a number round to itself?

Yes. A multiple of ten, like 70, is already rounded to the nearest ten. The worksheets leave these out so every problem needs thinking.

What is 45 rounded to the nearest ten?

50. The ones digit is 5, so the number is halfway between 40 and 50, and by the rule a halfway number rounds up.

How do you round to the nearest ten?

Look at the ones digit. If it is 0 to 4, round down to the ten below. If it is 5 to 9, round up to the next ten. The ones digit of the rounded number is always 0.

Why does 497 round to 500?

Because 497 is 49 tens and 7 ones, and 7 ones is more than half a ten, so it rounds up to 50 tens, which is 500. The 9 turns into a 10, and the 4 hundreds become 5 hundreds.
