The letter T sound

T says /t/, as in tiger, tree, train and turtle. The tongue taps behind the top teeth and lets out a puff of air with no voice. T and d are made the same way, but d uses the voice. T often ends words (cat, hot, sit), joins h to make th in this and thumb, and forms the blends tr (truck) and st (stop).

T is for tiger: letter T words for kids

Words that start with T: tiger, tree, train, turtle, tent, teddy bear, tooth, tomato, truck, tractor.

T inside or at the end: cat, hat, kite, boat, mitten, water.

The color page uses tiger, tree, train and turtle, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines, like T, are usually easier to start with than curved ones.

How to write T and t

  • Uppercase T: A tall line down, then a line across the top.
  • Lowercase t: A tall line down, then a short cross near the top.

Uppercase T is a tall line down from the top, then a line across the top. Lowercase t is a slightly shorter line, starting below the top line, with a crossbar on the middle line. Children often cross t too high or too low, so show that the bar sits on the dashed middle line.

Letter T tracing and the rest of the pack

  1. Trace: letter T tracing with arrows to follow, then uppercase T and lowercase t on their own.
  2. Find the letter: circle every T and t hidden among similar-looking letters, then count them.
  3. Letter maze: color the T squares to make a path from start to finish.
  4. Color: color the big Tt, trace the T words and draw something that starts with T.

Letter T activities for preschool

  • Train track: build a toy train track in a T shape.
  • Tap the table: tap the table each time you hear /t/ in a word.

A letter T week plan

  • Monday: say the /t/ sound together, trace T and t on the first page, then try the Tape T idea above.
  • Tuesday: work through the find-the-letter page, count how many you circled, and move on to Train track.
  • Wednesday: solve the letter T maze, then play Tap the table.
  • Thursday: color “T is for tiger”, read tiger, tree, train and turtle aloud and finish with Toothpick T.
  • Friday: write T and t from memory, look for T in a favorite picture book and reprint any page that felt tricky.

Letter T worksheets kindergarten teachers can use

Kindergarten readers meet t in tap, ten, tip, top, tub and at the end of bat, net, sit, hot and cut. The letter T worksheets teachers use also help with the sight words the, to and that, and with th, a digraph introduced later in the year.

Recognizing and naming every letter is part of the kindergarten Common Core reading foundations standards (RF.K.1.D). For the history of the letter itself, see T on Wikipedia.

Letter T worksheets: frequently asked questions

What age are letter T worksheets for?

Preschool and kindergarten, usually ages 3 to 6. Kindergarten expects children to recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core RF.K.1.D).

How many days should we spend on the letter T?

A letter-of-the-week plan uses one page a day: trace on Monday, find on Tuesday, the maze on Wednesday and coloring on Thursday, with Friday for review or a craft.

Where does the crossbar on t go?

On the dashed middle line. Lowercase t is a little shorter than tall letters like l and h.

Is th the same as t?

No. Th is a digraph with its own sounds, as in this and thumb. It is usually taught after single letters.

Can I print a different letter or several at once?

Yes. The maker on this page can build packs for any letters, like S, A, T, P, I, N, or the whole alphabet.
