The letter X sound
X usually says /ks/, as in box, fox, six and wax, where it comes at the end of the word. Very few English words start with x, and those that do often say /z/, as in xylophone, or say the letter name, as in x-ray. That is why many letter X pages, including ours, use words that end with x as well as words that start with it.
X is for x-ray: letter X words for kids
Words that start with X: x-ray, xylophone (very few everyday words start with x).
Words that end with x: box, fox, six, wax, ax, mix, taxi, exit.
The color page uses x-ray, xylophone, box and fox, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines, like X, are usually easier to start with than curved ones.
How to write X and x
- Uppercase X: A slant from top left to bottom right, then a slant from top right to bottom left.
- Lowercase x: The same crossing slants, small, from the middle line.
X is two slanted lines that cross in the middle. Uppercase and lowercase x have the same shape, just different sizes. Draw the line from the top left first, then the line from the top right. Making the lines cross exactly in the middle is good practice for pencil control.
