Grammar skills by grade
US schools follow a clear order for grammar, set out in the Common Core language standards. Here is what children usually learn each year, and which grammar worksheets fit.
1st grade
Common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, verbs for past, present and future, adjectives, and the four kinds of sentences. Capitals for names and dates, end marks, and commas in dates and lists (standards L.1.1 and L.1.2).
Try: nouns, verbs, kinds of sentences and the punctuation worksheets (fix the sentence).
2nd grade
Collective nouns, irregular plurals such as feet, children and mice, the past tense of irregular verbs, adjectives versus adverbs, and apostrophes for contractions and possessives (standards L.2.1 and L.2.2).
Try: plural nouns, past tense verbs, adjectives.
3rd grade
What nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs do in a sentence, abstract nouns, simple verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and comparing with adjectives such as bigger, biggest (standards L.3.1 and L.3.2).
Try: the parts of speech worksheets, with color coding or the noun, verb or adjective sort.
Starting younger? The capital letters and end marks sheets suit kindergarten once children write simple sentences.
Quick grammar rules to share with kids
- Nouns name people, places, animals and things. Names of particular people, places and days, like Sam or Saturday, are proper nouns, so they always begin with a capital.
- Verbs tell what someone does (jump, bake) or is (is, are, was). Helping verbs such as can, will and did are verbs too.
- Adjectives answer “what kind?”, “which one?” or “how many?”: a red ball, the sleepy cat.
- Every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a period, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Plurals: most nouns add -s. Nouns ending with ch, sh, s, x or z take -es (box, boxes). A consonant plus y becomes -ies.
- Past tense: most verbs add -ed. Some change completely: go, went; see, saw; eat, ate.
How to teach grammar without the groans
- Start with the child’s own words. Ask for three things in the room (nouns), then three things they can do (verbs).
- Act it out. Say a verb and let children do it; say an adjective and let them find something in the room that matches.
- Use one skill per sheet. Grammar worksheets work best when they focus on one idea: finding only the nouns is easier than sorting three parts of speech at once.
- Mark mistakes kindly. The answer keys show the right words, so children can check and correct their own work.
- Move straight into writing. After a punctuation sheet, ask for two sentences of their own on story paper with the same rule.
Pair grammar with reading and writing
Grammar sticks best when children meet it in real text. Follow your grammar worksheets with a short passage from the reading comprehension worksheets, practise the same words in the spelling worksheet generator, or build vocabulary with compound words, synonyms and antonyms, prefixes and suffixes and homophones.
Practice it as a game

Frequently asked questions
9 quick answers
Which parts of speech worksheets should come first?
Nouns, then verbs, then adjectives. Children find naming words easiest, and each new part of speech builds on the one before.
What do the punctuation worksheets cover?
Capital letters, periods, question marks and exclamation points, then commas in lists for older children. Every page has an answer key.
What grade are these grammar worksheets for?
They suit 1st to 3rd grade, and the Fix the Sentence pages work well in kindergarten. Choose the activity and level that match your child.
Do the grammar worksheets have answer keys?
Yes. These are grammar worksheets with answers: every sheet prints an answer key page at the end, listing the nouns, verbs or adjectives in each sentence, the corrected sentences, or the plural and past tense forms.
What are the 8 parts of speech?
Nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. Young children start with the first big three, nouns, verbs and adjectives, which is where these sheets focus.
Are articles like “a” and “the” adjectives?
Some programs call a, an and the adjectives, and others call them articles or determiners. On these worksheets they are not counted as adjectives, so children can focus on describing words.
Why is “is” a verb?
Is, am, are, was and were are being verbs. They do not show action, but they are still verbs. Helping verbs like can, will, does and did are verbs too, and our answer keys count them.
Can I get a different set of sentences?
Yes. Press New sentences for a fresh mix from our sentence bank, or change the activity to practice a different skill.
Are these grammar worksheets free to print?
Yes, every sheet and answer key, for families and classrooms alike. Nothing to sign up for.
