| Page | Picture | Good for age | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Decorated karwa pot with a spout and lid | 4 to 8 | The karwa is a small clay pot that gives the festival its name. It is used to offer water to the moon. |
| 2 | Sieve (channi) and full moon with stars | 4 to 9 | When the moon rises, women look at it through a sieve before breaking the fast. |
| 3 | Puja thali with a diya, sweets and flowers | 3 to 6 | The thali holds the things used in the evening puja, such as a diya, sweets and flowers. |
| 4 | Full moon rising over a row of diyas | 3 to 6 | The fast ends after moonrise, so the moon is the most awaited sight of the day. |

What is Karwa Chauth?
Karwa Chauth is a festival kept mainly in North India, in states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Married women fast from sunrise until the moon rises and pray for the long life and well-being of their husbands. In many families, the day starts before dawn with sargi, a meal often given by the mother-in-law. Wikipedia’s Karva Chauth article covers the customs and the regions where it is observed.
In the evening, women dress up, often in red, gather for the puja and listen to the Karwa Chauth story. When the moon appears, they offer water to it from the karwa, look at the moon through a sieve and then at their husband, who offers them the first sip of water to end the fast. Customs differ from family to family, so children may see some of these steps done in other ways.
Coloring tips for Karwa Chauth pages
- Festive colours. Red, maroon, gold, orange and green are popular colours for Karwa Chauth clothes and decorations.
- Clay pot. Color the karwa brown or terracotta, then add bright dots and flowers on top like a painted pot.
- Night sky. On the moon pages, color the sky dark blue or purple and leave the moon pale yellow or white so it glows.
- Mehndi look. For page 5, try a single brown or orange colour in different shades, just like real henna.
- Sparkle. A touch of glitter glue on the diya flames, the thali rim or the stars makes the page festive.
