The letter E sound

Short e is the sound in egg, elf, bed and pet. It sits between short a and short i, so children sometimes mix it up; a big smile with the mouth half open helps. Long e says its name, as in eel, emu and me, and it is often spelled ee (tree) or ea (seal). E is also the silent e at the end of words like cake and bike, which makes the vowel before it long.

E is for egg: letter E words for kids

Words that start with E: egg, elephant, elbow, envelope, elf, engine, eel, emu, exit, easel.

Short e in the middle: bed, red, pen, ten, jet, nest.

The color page uses egg, elephant, elbow and envelope, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

Uppercase shape Straight lines only
Often confused with F and B
Scrabble tile value 1 point

Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines, like E, are usually easier to start with than curved ones.

How to write E and e

  • Uppercase E: A tall line down, then three lines across: top, middle and bottom.
  • Lowercase e: A small line across the middle, then curve up and around like a c.

Uppercase E has four strokes: down, then three lines across, top, middle and bottom. Lowercase e starts in the middle: go across, then curve up and around like a c. Children often start lowercase e at the top, which makes it lopsided, so draw a dot where the stroke begins.

Letter E tracing and the rest of the pack

  1. Trace: letter E tracing with arrows to follow, then uppercase E and lowercase e on their own.
  2. Find the letter: circle every E and e hidden among similar-looking letters, then count them.
  3. Letter maze: color the E squares to make a path from start to finish.
  4. Color: color the big Ee, trace the E words and draw something that starts with E.

Letter E activities for preschool

Short, hands-on games make the letter E worksheets stick. Try one a day alongside the printed pages:

  • Elephant ears: make paper elephant ears and wear them while saying short e words.
  • Envelope post: post letter cards into an envelope, but only the Es get delivered.
  • Exercise E: stretch your body into an E shape: stand straight with arms out at three levels.

A letter E week plan

  • Monday: say the /e/ sound together, trace E and e on the first page, then try the Egg carton sort idea above.
  • Tuesday: work through the find-the-letter page, count how many you circled, and move on to Elephant ears.
  • Wednesday: solve the letter E maze, then play Envelope post.
  • Thursday: color “E is for egg”, read egg, elephant, elbow and envelope aloud and finish with Exercise E.
  • Friday: write E and e from memory, look for E in a favorite picture book and reprint any page that felt tricky.

Letter E worksheets kindergarten teachers can use

Kindergarten readers practice short e in bed, hen, net, pet and ten, and they learn sight words like he, me, we and the. The letter E worksheets classes use help with both the sound and the shape. Because short e and short i sound close, say pairs like pen/pin and bed/bid and let your child point to the e word.

Recognizing and naming every letter is part of the kindergarten Common Core reading foundations standards (RF.K.1.D). For the history of the letter itself, see E on Wikipedia.

What age are letter E worksheets for?

Preschool and kindergarten, usually ages 3 to 6. Kindergarten expects children to recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core RF.K.1.D).

A letter-of-the-week plan uses one page a day: trace on Monday, find on Tuesday, the maze on Wednesday and coloring on Thursday, with Friday for review or a craft.

Why is e so common in English?

E appears in many short words like the, he and be, and as silent e at the end of words. It is the most used letter in written English.
