Each of these letter P worksheets is a one-page PDF; the find and maze pages add an answer key. Press Customize to change the colors or paper size in the maker on this page.

The letter P sound

P says /p/, as in pig, pan, pizza and pencil. Lips close and pop open with a puff of air but no voice; hold a tissue in front of the mouth and watch it move. P and b are made the same way except that b uses the voice. P ends many words (cap, mop, cup), forms blends like pl (plane) and pr (present), and joins h to make /f/ in words like phone.

P is for pig: letter P words for kids

Words that start with P: pig, pan, pizza, pencil, panda, penguin, pear, pumpkin, puppy, piano.

P inside or at the end: cap, mop, cup, apple, happy, lamp.

The color page uses pig, pan, pizza and pencil, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

Letter P at a glance

Place in the alphabet 16th of 26, after O and before Q
Type Consonant
Uppercase shape Straight lines and curves
Often confused with b, d, q and R
Scrabble tile value 3 points

Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines and curves, like P, combine both skills, so practice the separate strokes first.

How to write P and p

  • Uppercase P: A tall line down, then back to the top and one bump that ends at the middle.
  • Lowercase p: A line down below the baseline, then back up and around to make a small bump.

Uppercase P is a tall line with a bump at the top. Lowercase p starts at the middle line, goes down below the baseline, then comes back up to make the bump on the right. Because p is b turned upside down and q reversed, the find-the-letter page includes those letters on purpose.

Letter P tracing and the rest of the pack

  1. Trace: letter P tracing with arrows to follow, then uppercase P and lowercase p on their own.
  2. Find the letter: circle every P and p hidden among similar-looking letters, then count them.
  3. Letter maze: color the P squares to make a path from start to finish.
  4. Color: color the big Pp, trace the P words and draw something that starts with P.

Letter P activities for preschool

Short, hands-on games make the letter P worksheets stick. Try one a day alongside the printed pages:

  • Pom-pom P: glue pom-poms along a big P.
  • Popcorn pop: say a p word every time a kernel pops (with an adult at the stove).
  • Pizza party: make a paper pizza and add P toppings: pepperoni, peppers, pineapple.
  • Puppet show: use a paper bag puppet that only says words starting with /p/.

A letter P week plan

  • Monday: say the /p/ sound together, trace P and p on the first page, then try the Pom-pom P idea above.
  • Tuesday: work through the find-the-letter page, count how many you circled, and move on to Popcorn pop.
  • Wednesday: solve the letter P maze, then play Pizza party.
  • Thursday: color “P is for pig”, read pig, pan, pizza and pencil aloud and finish with Puppet show.
  • Friday: write P and p from memory, look for P in a favorite picture book and reprint any page that felt tricky.

Letter P worksheets kindergarten teachers can use

Kindergarten children read pan, pen, pet, pig, pin, pop and pup, and sight words like play and put. The letter P worksheets teachers use help separate p from b, d and q, the four letters young readers mix up most.

Recognizing and naming every letter is part of the kindergarten Common Core reading foundations standards (RF.K.1.D). For the history of the letter itself, see P on Wikipedia.

Letter P worksheets: frequently asked questions

What age are letter P worksheets for?

Preschool and kindergarten, usually ages 3 to 6. Kindergarten expects children to recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core RF.K.1.D).

How many days should we spend on the letter P?

A letter-of-the-week plan uses one page a day: trace on Monday, find on Tuesday, the maze on Wednesday and coloring on Thursday, with Friday for review or a craft.

How is p different from b?

Both pop with the lips, but b uses the voice and p is just air. Feel the throat: b buzzes, p does not.

Why include b, d and q on the find-the-letter page?

They are mirror or flipped versions of p. Spotting the difference is exactly the skill children need for reading.

Can I print a different letter or several at once?

Yes. The maker on this page can build packs for any letters, like S, A, T, P, I, N, or the whole alphabet.
