The letter Q sound
In English, q is nearly always followed by u, and together they say /kw/, as in queen, quilt, quick and question. Teach qu as a team rather than q alone. At the end of a few words, -que says /k/, as in unique, but young children rarely meet it. Because so few words use q, a handful of picture words is all children need.
Q is for queen: letter Q words for kids
Words that start with Qu: queen, quilt, question, quail, quack, quarter, quiet, quick, quiz, quiver.
Qu inside a word: squirrel, square, squid, liquid, equal, aquarium.
The color page uses queen, quilt, question and quail, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

| Uppercase shape | Straight lines and curves |
| Often confused with | O, p and g |
| Scrabble tile value | 10 points |
Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines and curves, like Q, combine both skills, so practice the separate strokes first.
How to write Q and q
- Uppercase Q: A big O with a short slanted tail across the bottom right.
- Lowercase q: Curve around like a c, go up, then straight down below the baseline (some styles add a small flick to the right).
Uppercase Q is an O with a short tail that crosses the bottom right. Lowercase q starts like a c, closes, goes straight down below the baseline and often ends with a small flick to the right. Children often confuse q with p and g; remind them that q’s tail goes down on the right, while g hooks to the left.

Kindergarten readers meet qu in quit, quiz and quack, and later in queen and quick. The letter Q worksheets teachers use usually teach qu as a pair, so the color page words all start with qu. Q is one of the last letters many children master because it is used so rarely.
Recognizing and naming every letter is part of the kindergarten Common Core reading foundations standards (RF.K.1.D). For the history of the letter itself, see Q on Wikipedia.
