Long division 3-digit by 1-digit uses the same four steps as 2-digit problems, with one more round, and two new things to watch for: a first digit that is too small, and a zero in the answer. The four PDFs on this page have problems that divide evenly, problems with remainders and a mixed set, and every answer key shows each step. They follow standard 4.NBT.B.6 of the Common Core standards for grade 4 number and operations in base ten.

Long division 3-digit by 1-digit: 256 divided by 4 equals 64 when the first digit is too small
256 ÷ 4. The first digit is too small.

About these worksheets

Three-digit long division uses the same four steps as 2-digit problems, repeated one more time. Two things catch children out:

  • The first digit is too small: in 256 ÷ 4, 4 does not go into 2, so start with 25. The answer has only two digits.
  • A zero in the answer: in 408 ÷ 4, after 4 ÷ 4 = 1, bring down the 0. 4 goes into 0 zero times, so write 0 in the answer before bringing down the 8. The answer is 102, not 12.

What is on this page

  • Problems that divide evenly.
  • Problems that all have remainders.
  • A mixed set.

3 digit by 1 digit division worksheets: how the sets are built

The 3 digit by 1 digit division worksheets in this pack have four sets with twelve problems each. Two sets divide evenly, one set has a remainder in every problem, and one set is a mix of both. The problems use divisors from 2 to 9 and dividends from 100 to 999, and every answer key shows each round of the division, including the rounds where a zero goes in the answer.

Long division 3-digit by 1-digit: four worked examples

Long division 3-digit by 1-digit has three rounds of the four steps, and the number we divide in the first round can be one digit or two. These tables show the steps for four problems that cover the cases children meet most. Wikipedia’s article on long division has a full description. The first is an easy problem with no remainder:

456 ÷ 3 = 152

Round Number we divide Digit of the answer Multiply Subtract Next
1 4 1 1 × 3 = 3 4 − 3 = 1 bring down the 5
2 15 5 5 × 3 = 15 15 − 15 = 0 bring down the 6
3 6 2 2 × 3 = 6 6 − 6 = 0 done

The second has a first digit that is too small, since 4 does not go into 2:

256 ÷ 4 = 64

Round Number we divide Digit of the answer Multiply Subtract Next
1 25 6 6 × 4 = 24 25 − 24 = 1 bring down the 6
2 16 4 4 × 4 = 16 16 − 16 = 0 done

The third has a zero in the answer, because after 4 − 4 = 0 the next digit is 0:

408 ÷ 4 = 102

Round Number we divide Digit of the answer Multiply Subtract Next
1 4 1 1 × 4 = 4 4 − 4 = 0 bring down the 0
2 0 0 0 × 4 = 0 0 − 0 = 0 bring down the 8
3 8 2 2 × 4 = 8 8 − 8 = 0 done

The fourth has a remainder, and it also has a zero in the answer:

725 ÷ 6 = 120 R5

Round Number we divide Digit of the answer Multiply Subtract Next
1 7 1 1 × 6 = 6 7 − 6 = 1 bring down the 2
2 12 2 2 × 6 = 12 12 − 12 = 0 bring down the 5
3 5 0 0 × 6 = 0 5 − 0 = 5 done

3 digit division: how many digits will the answer have?

For 3 digit division, the number of digits in the answer depends on the first digit of the dividend. If the first digit is smaller than the divisor, the answer has two digits. If it is as big as the divisor, the answer has three. This table counts the three-digit dividends from 100 to 999 for each divisor from 2 to 9:

Divisor Dividends with a 2-digit answer Dividends with a 3-digit answer Share with a 2-digit answer Divide evenly Answer has a 0 in it Share with a 0
2 100 800 11% 450 162 18%
3 200 700 22% 300 171 19%
4 300 600 33% 225 160 18%
5 400 500 44% 180 135 15%
6 500 400 56% 150 144 16%
7 600 300 67% 128 154 17%
8 700 200 78% 112 160 18%
9 800 100 89% 100 171 19%

With a divisor of 2 most dividends have a three-digit answer, but with a divisor of 9 only the numbers from 900 to 999 do. A zero in the answer is also common: for a divisor of 4, about one dividend in 6 has a 0 in the answer. The share in the table is the reason why the zero needs its own practice.

Zeros in the answer: when the divisor does not go in

A zero in the answer appears when the number we divide in some round is smaller than the divisor. Children often skip the round and write an answer that is a digit short. This table shows the first dividends that divide evenly and have a 0 in the answer, for four divisors:

Divisor Dividends that divide evenly with a 0 in the answer (the answer)
4 120 (30), 160 (40), 200 (50), 240 (60)
5 100 (20), 150 (30), 200 (40), 250 (50)
6 120 (20), 180 (30), 240 (40), 300 (50)
7 140 (20), 210 (30), 280 (40), 350 (50)

The rule is that every digit of the dividend has a matching digit in the answer, starting from the first digit that the divisor can go into. If a digit has no matching digit in the answer, the answer is wrong. The place value worksheets page explains the place of each digit.

Long division with remainders: every remainder is equally likely

For long division with remainders, there is a surprise for children who ask how often each remainder appears. Among the 900 three-digit dividends, each remainder comes up almost exactly the same number of times. This table shows the counts for five divisors:

Long division 3-digit by 1-digit: 408 divided by 4 equals 102 with a zero in the answer
408 ÷ 4. A zero in the answer.
Divisor How many of the 900 three-digit dividends leave each remainder (remainder: count)
4 0: 225, 1: 225, 2: 225, 3: 225
6 0: 150, 1: 150, 2: 150, 3: 150, 4: 150, 5: 150
7 0: 128, 1: 128, 2: 129, 3: 129, 4: 129, 5: 129, 6: 128
8 0: 112, 1: 112, 2: 112, 3: 112, 4: 113, 5: 113, 6: 113, 7: 113
9 0: 100, 1: 100, 2: 100, 3: 100, 4: 100, 5: 100, 6: 100, 7: 100, 8: 100

For a divisor of 6, every remainder from 0 to 5 appears exactly 150 times, because 900 is a multiple of 6. For 7, the counts are 128 or 129. This is the reason why one worksheet cannot have only problems with the same remainder. The division with remainders page explains what a remainder means in a story.

Long division worksheets grade 4: estimating first

The long division worksheets grade 4 expect children to estimate before dividing, using compatible numbers. A compatible number is one that is close to the dividend and easy to divide, such as 720 for 725 when the divisor is 6. This table shows six estimates, with the exact answer:

Problem Compatible number Estimate Exact answer Close?
725 ÷ 6 720 720 ÷ 6 = 120 120 R5 yes
456 ÷ 3 450 450 ÷ 3 = 150 152 yes
599 ÷ 8 600 600 ÷ 8 = 75 74 R7 yes
837 ÷ 9 810 810 ÷ 9 = 90 93 yes
382 ÷ 5 400 400 ÷ 5 = 80 76 R2 yes
645 ÷ 7 630 630 ÷ 7 = 90 92 R1 yes

An estimate does not need to be exact, and it is a way to catch a missing digit. If the estimate of 725 ÷ 6 is 120 and the answer is 12, the answer is wrong. The estimating with rounding page has more about estimating.

Long division practice: checking every answer

Long division practice is easier when children check every answer. The check is to multiply the answer by the divisor and add the remainder. This table checks six answers from the examples above:

Problem Answer Check: divisor × quotient + remainder Equals the start?
456 ÷ 3 152 3 × 152 = 456 yes
256 ÷ 4 64 4 × 64 = 256 yes
408 ÷ 4 102 4 × 102 = 408 yes
725 ÷ 6 120 R5 6 × 120 + 5 = 725 yes
837 ÷ 9 93 9 × 93 = 837 yes
599 ÷ 8 74 R7 8 × 74 + 7 = 599 yes

The check also shows why the remainder must be smaller than the divisor. If it is as big as the divisor, another group fits, and the answer is one digit short in the last place.

Common mistakes with long division 3-digit by 1-digit

Most mistakes come from the first digit, from a missing zero, or from a column that is not lined up. This table shows five mistakes, what went wrong and the fix:

What the child writes or says What went wrong The fix
256 ÷ 4 = 604 writes the first digit over the 2, which 4 does not go into use 25: the first digit of the answer goes over the 5
408 ÷ 4 = 12 misses the zero when 4 goes into 0 no times write 0 above the 0, then bring down the 8: the answer is 102
725 ÷ 6 = 120 R6 the remainder is the same as the divisor a remainder must be less than the divisor: 120 R5
456 ÷ 3 = 152, but the last subtraction is not done stops before the last digit bring down every digit before you stop
837 ÷ 9 = 83 puts a digit in the wrong column write each digit of the answer straight above the last digit that was brought down

Long division 3-digit by 1-digit word problems

Story problems for three-digit division use packing and sharing. Ask children to estimate first, solve with the four steps and then check:

Word problem Working Answer
A school has 456 books on 3 shelves with the same number on each shelf. How many books are on each shelf? 456 ÷ 3 152 books
256 children are put into 4 equal teams. How many are on each team? 256 ÷ 4 64 children
A shop packs 408 pencils into boxes of 4. How many boxes does it fill? 408 ÷ 4 102 boxes
A farmer has 725 eggs and packs them in cartons of 6. How many full cartons are there, and how many eggs are left? 725 ÷ 6 120 cartons, 5 eggs left
A bus company has 837 tickets to share equally among 9 buses. How many does each bus get? 837 ÷ 9 93 tickets
599 marbles are put into bags of 8. How many full bags can be made? 599 ÷ 8 74 bags, with 7 marbles left

Games and activities for long division 3-digit by 1-digit

Children learn long division 3-digit by 1-digit best when they play with it. These games use things that are found at home or in a classroom:

  • Estimate and check: estimate the answer with a compatible number before every problem
  • Zero detective: find problems in a set that have a zero in the answer before solving them
  • Remainder bingo: a bingo card with remainders, and calling cards with problems
  • Digit cards: draw three digit cards and a divisor card, and divide the three-digit number
  • Check partner: swap worksheets and check each answer by multiplying
  • Packing contest: find how many full boxes of 6 can be made from 725 counters, using a calculator to check

Extra support and extra challenge with long division 3-digit by 1-digit

For children who need more support: write the multiples of the divisor beside the problem, and make sure the 2-digit long division is secure first. Use grid paper to keep the digits in columns. Mark where each digit of the answer goes before starting, and use the answer key to check every round.

For children who need more challenge: ask for the answer to 2,000 ÷ 8 using the zeros, for the biggest 3-digit number that divides by 7 with a remainder of 6, and for the dividend with the answer 105 when divided by 6. Look for dividends that give a zero in the answer, and make up a story for one of them.

How to tell that a child is ready to move on from long division 3-digit by 1-digit

  1. The child places the first digit of the answer correctly.
  2. The child writes a zero in the answer when the divisor does not go in.
  3. The child finds the remainder and checks that it is smaller than the divisor.
  4. The child estimates and checks every answer.

When all four are true, long division 3-digit by 1-digit is secure, so move on to the long division 4-digit by 1-digit page, or to the long division 2-digit divisors page.

Frequently asked questions

6 quick answers

How do I check a long division answer?

Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get the number you started with: 120 × 6 + 5 = 725.

Why is there sometimes a 0 in the middle of the answer?

When the divisor does not go into the number you have after bringing down a digit, that place in the answer is 0.

Why is there sometimes a zero in the answer?

When the divisor does not go into the number we have after bringing down a digit, that place of the answer is 0. In 408 ÷ 4, after 4 − 4 = 0 we bring down the 0, and 4 goes into 0 no times, so we write 0.

How do you know how many digits are in the answer?

If the first digit of the dividend is as big as the divisor, the answer has as many digits as the dividend. If it is smaller, the answer has one digit fewer.

How do you check a long division answer?

Multiply the answer by the divisor and add the remainder. For 725 ÷ 6 = 120 R5, 6 × 120 + 5 = 725, so the answer is right.

What is the hardest part of long division 3-digit by 1-digit?

The hardest part of long division 3-digit by 1-digit is usually a zero in the answer, or a first digit that is smaller than the divisor. The worksheets on this page include both cases, and the answer keys show every round, so children can see where a step was missed.
