The letter N sound
N says /n/, as in nest, nose, nut and net. The tongue touches behind the top teeth and the sound hums through the nose; it can be stretched like m. N often ends words (pen, sun, van), and it teams up with g to make ng in sing and ring, and with k in -nk words like pink and bank. In kn words, like knot, the n is the sound you hear.
N is for nest: letter N words for kids
Words that start with N: nest, nose, nut, net, nail, needle, nurse, nine, night, noodles.
N inside or at the end: pen, sun, van, ring, pink, banana.
The color page uses nest, nose, nut and net, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines, like N, are usually easier to start with than curved ones.
How to write N and n
- Uppercase N: A tall line down, back to the top, slant down to the bottom right, then a line up.
- Lowercase n: A short line down, back up, and one hump.
Uppercase N goes down, back up to the top, slants down to the bottom, and goes straight up again. Lowercase n is a short line with one hump. If your child writes N backwards, show that the slant always goes from the top left to the bottom right.

Letter N worksheets kindergarten teachers can use
Kindergarten children read nap, net, nod, nut, pan, pin and sun, and the sight words no, not and now. The letter N worksheets teachers use support both the letter shape and listening for /n/ at the end of words, which is harder for young children than hearing it at the start.
Recognizing and naming every letter is part of the kindergarten Common Core reading foundations standards (RF.K.1.D). For the history of the letter itself, see N on Wikipedia.

Letter N worksheets: frequently asked questions
What age are letter N worksheets for?
Preschool and kindergarten, usually ages 3 to 6. Kindergarten expects children to recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core RF.K.1.D).
How many days should we spend on the letter N?
A letter-of-the-week plan uses one page a day: trace on Monday, find on Tuesday, the maze on Wednesday and coloring on Thursday, with Friday for review or a craft.
Why does my child write N backwards?
Reversed N is very common in preschool. Tracing with arrows and saying “down, up, slant down, up” usually fixes it.
What is the ng sound?
N and g together make one nasal sound at the end of words like sing and long. It is usually taught in first grade.
Can I print a different letter or several at once?
Yes. The maker on this page can build packs for any letters, like S, A, T, P, I, N, or the whole alphabet.
