The story of Mother’s Day
Modern Mother’s Day in the United States began with Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honor her mother and all mothers. She held a memorial service in West Virginia in 1908, and by 1914 President Woodrow Wilson had made the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
Other countries have their own versions. In the United Kingdom, Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, and many other countries pick a date that fits their own history. Many families now use the day to thank anyone who cares for them: a mom, a grandmother, a stepmother, an aunt or a foster parent.
Wikipedia’s Mother’s Day article describes the history of the day in different countries.
What is in the Mother’s Day activity pack?
Every activity uses the same list of 24 Mother’s Day words, so children meet each word several times in different ways. The list is the heart of these Mothers Day worksheets: the word search hides it, the scramble mixes it up, the bingo calls it out and the writing prompt asks children to use it.
Mother’s Day word search: three levels
The word search comes in easy, medium and hard grids, with 10, 14 and 18 words from the list.
The longest Mother’s Day word is breakfast with 9 letters, and the shortest words are mom, hug and may with 3.
Mother’s Day vocabulary: words to talk about
Take a few minutes to talk about the words before children search for them. These eight are a good place to start:
| Word | Letters | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| mother | 6 | A female parent, or a woman who cares for a child |
| caring | 6 | Showing kindness and concern for others |
| helper | 6 | Someone who gives a hand |

| tulips | 6 | Spring flowers with cup-shaped blooms |
| roses | 5 | Fragrant flowers, often red or pink |

| special | 7 | Better or more important than usual |
The other 16 words in the list are mom, love, flowers, card, hug, kind, breakfast, gift, family, thank, smile, garden, may, heart, laugh and strong.
