How to use this Halloween puzzle pack
- One pack, several ages: give puzzle 1 or 2 to younger children and puzzle 3 or 4 to older ones, so siblings or a mixed class can work side by side.
- A week of activities: one puzzle a day in the run-up to Halloween, with an adult keeping the answer keys.
- Party table: print pages 3 to 6 only for a calm activity corner at a Halloween party.
- Early finishers: keep a few copies in the classroom for children who finish their work early.
- Vocabulary: puzzle 4 is full of words from myths and stories, such as banshee, cyclops and gargoyle. Ask older children to look up one they do not know.
- Car trips and waiting rooms: staple the pages into a little booklet with the cover on top.
Halloween word search pack: the four puzzles in numbers
Each puzzle in the Halloween word search pack has a bigger grid, more words and more directions than the one before. This table is calculated from the word lists, and the last column counts the places where the longest word could be hidden:
| Puzzle | Squares in the grid | Words | Letters in the words | Share of the grid | Longest word | Places for the longest word |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Pumpkin Patch | 8 x 8 = 64 | 7 | 22 | 34% | moon (4) | 80 |
| 2. Trick or Treat | 10 x 10 = 100 | 10 | 51 | 51% | lantern (7) | 80 |
| 3. Haunted House | 13 x 13 = 169 | 12 | 79 | 47% | moonlight (9) | 180 |
| 4. Monster Mash | 15 x 15 = 225 | 14 | 88 | 39% | gargoyle (8) | 736 |
The share of the grid that is covered by the words in the Halloween puzzle pack goes up from puzzle to puzzle, so the harder puzzles have fewer decoy letters. In puzzle 4 the longest word, gargoyle, could be hidden in 736 places, which is about 9 times as many as the 80 places for moon, the longest word in puzzle 1.
Halloween activity pack printable: what is inside
This Halloween activity pack printable, the Halloween puzzle pack, is a ten-page workbook. Page 1 is a cover to color with a line for the owner’s name, and page 2 explains how the pack works. Pages 3 to 6 are the four word searches, and pages 7 to 10 are the answer keys, one for each puzzle. The pack is black and white, so it prints cheaply on any printer, and children can color the pumpkin outlines on the cover.
Halloween activities for kids printable: a week of puzzles
One Halloween puzzle pack can fill a week before Halloween. This plan uses one page a day and finishes with a puzzle the children make themselves:
| Day | Activity | From the pack |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Color the cover and read the contents page | Pages 1 and 2 |
| Tuesday | Puzzle 1, Pumpkin Patch | Page 3 |
| Wednesday | Puzzle 2, Trick or Treat | Page 4 |
| Thursday | Puzzle 3, Haunted House, then look up two words | Page 5 |
| Friday | Puzzle 4, Monster Mash, with a partner | Page 6 |
| Saturday | Check all four with the answer keys | Pages 7 to 10 |
| Halloween | Make your own puzzle in the word search maker | Maker |
For other Halloween ideas, see the history and traditions of the festival in Wikipedia’s Halloween article, and read it with older children before they start puzzle 4.
Monster Mash vocabulary: the hard words explained
Puzzle 4 uses words from myths and folk tales that many children have not met. Here is what ten of them mean, so that the puzzle teaches new vocabulary and not just spelling:
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| Banshee | A spirit from Irish folklore whose wail is said to warn of a death |
| Cyclops | A giant with one eye in the middle of his forehead, from Greek myths |
| Gargoyle | A carved stone creature that sticks out from a building and carries rainwater away |
| Ghoul | A monster in old stories that lives in graveyards |
| Goblin | A small, sneaky creature in folk tales |
| Phantom | Another word for a ghost |
| Troll | A big or small creature in Scandinavian folk tales, often living under a bridge |
| Werewolf | A person who turns into a wolf when the moon is full, in stories |
| Yeti | A giant, hairy creature said to live in the snowy Himalaya mountains |
| Zombie | A person raised from the dead in horror stories, a word that comes from Haitian folklore |
