Time Calculator: Add and Subtract Hours and Minutes

Add or subtract hours and minutes, find the time between two times and convert hours to decimals. Example: 9:45 + 2:30 = 12:15.

This free time calculator adds and subtracts hours and minutes, finds the time between two clock times, converts hours and minutes to decimal hours and totals a whole list of times. Add 2:30 to 9:45 and it answers 12:15, with the working shown line by line, so you can check homework, a time sheet or a travel plan.

Quick answer: to add hours and minutes, add the hours, add the minutes, then turn every 60 minutes into 1 hour. 9:45 + 2:30 gives 11 hours and 75 minutes, which is 12:15. To subtract time, borrow 1 hour (60 minutes) when the minutes on top are smaller: 15:20 − 9:45 = 5:35.

Time calculator diagram: 9:45 plus 2:30 equals 12:15, and borrowing an hour for 15:20 minus 9:45 equals 5:35

Time calculator examples and a printable time chart

The cards below add hours and minutes, find an elapsed time across noon and turn a number of minutes into hours and minutes. The printable chart converts every hour between 12-hour and 24-hour time and lists common minutes as decimal hours for time sheets.

How to add hours and minutes

To add hours and minutes by hand, add the hours and the minutes separately, then carry every full 60 minutes into the hours. For 9:45 + 2:30, the hours give 9 + 2 = 11 and the minutes give 45 + 30 = 75. Since 75 minutes is 1 hour 15 minutes, the total is 12 hours 15 minutes. Start a 2 hour 30 minute task at 9:45 am and you finish at 12:15 pm.

The add time mode keeps the minutes between 0 and 59 for you, so you never end up with an answer like 11:75. These sums show the carrying step in action.

First time Add Total minutes Answer (h:mm)
9:45 2:30 735 min 12:15
1:50 2:20 250 min 4:10
7:35 3:40 675 min 11:15
0:45 0:50 95 min 1:35
12:40 0:50 810 min 13:30
23:15 1:45 1500 min 25:00
36:30 14:45 3075 min 51:15

Add hours and minutes on a calculator or in Excel

A phone calculator treats 2.30 as a decimal, not as 2 hours 30 minutes, so convert first: 2:30 is 2.5 hours. In Excel or Google Sheets, type each time as 9:45 and 2:30, add them with =A1+B1, and format the cell as [h]:mm so totals above 24 hours do not wrap back to zero.

How to subtract time

To subtract time, take the minutes from the minutes and the hours from the hours. When the minutes on top are smaller, borrow one hour and add 60 minutes. For 15:20 − 9:45, 20 minutes is less than 45, so 15:20 becomes 14:80. Then 80 − 45 = 35 minutes and 14 − 9 = 5 hours, so the answer is 5:35.

If the second time is bigger than the first, the answer is negative and the calculator shows a minus sign. 1:30 − 2:00 is −0:30, which on a clock is 11:30 pm the day before.

Start Subtract Answer (h:mm)
15:20 9:45 5:35
10:05 7:50 2:15
8:00 3:25 4:35
12:15 0:50 11:25
5:10 1:35 3:35
2:00 1:01 0:59

Elapsed time calculator: time between two times

Elapsed time is how long passes between a start and an end. Write both times on the 24-hour clock and subtract the start from the end. From 9:45 am to 3:20 pm, that is 15:20 − 9:45 = 5 hours 35 minutes. The 24-hour form removes the am and pm confusion: 1 pm is 13:00, 6 pm is 18:00 and 11 pm is 23:00. The elapsed time calculator mode also accepts am and pm directly, and it handles spans that cross midnight by adding 24 hours to the end time.

Another classroom method counts up in jumps. From 9:45 to 10:00 is 15 minutes, from 10:00 to 3:00 pm is 5 hours, and from 3:00 to 3:20 is 20 minutes. Add them: 15 + 20 minutes plus 5 hours is 5:35, the same answer.

Time between two times with a lunch break

For a work day, subtract the unpaid break after finding the time between the start and the end. This is how the time calculator with lunch break works: 9:00 am to 5:30 pm is 8:30, minus a 30 minute break is 8:00. The table shows more shifts, with the decimal hours that payroll uses.

Start End Break Time worked Decimal hours
9:00 am 5:30 pm 30 min 8:00 8
8:15 am 4:45 pm 0 min 8:30 8.5
7:00 am 3:30 pm 45 min 7:45 7.75
10:30 pm 6:15 am 0 min 7:45 7.75
6:50 pm 11:20 pm 0 min 4:30 4.5

If you track hours for pay, the work hours calculator totals a whole week with breaks, and the date calculator adds days and weeks to a calendar date.

Hours to decimal: convert hours and minutes

Time sheets and pay calculations often use decimal hours, where the minutes are divided by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. Do not mix up 7:45 with 7.45 hours: 7.45 hours is only 7 hours 27 minutes. To convert the other way, multiply the decimal part by 60.

Minutes Decimal hours Minutes Decimal hours
5 min 0.0833 35 min 0.5833
10 min 0.1667 40 min 0.6667
15 min 0.25 45 min 0.75
20 min 0.3333 50 min 0.8333
25 min 0.4167 55 min 0.9167
30 min 0.5 60 min 1

For example, 7 hours 45 minutes at $22.50 an hour is 7.75 × 22.50 = $174.38. In the United States, the federal rule on rounding time (29 CFR 785.48) says employers may record start and stop times to the nearest 5 minutes, one-tenth of an hour or quarter of an hour, as long as it averages out so employees are fully paid. Use the overtime calculator or the hourly to salary calculator for the pay step.

Multiply and divide time

The calculator can also multiply a time by a number or divide it. Practice 25 minutes a day for 7 days is 25 × 7 = 175 minutes, or 2:55. Splitting a 4:30 task between 3 people gives 4:30 ÷ 3 = 1:30 each. Under the hood it works in seconds, then converts back to hours, minutes and seconds. Useful for lap times, batch cooking, a study plan repeated every day or a task that repeats across a week.

Time Operation Answer
0:25 × 7 2:55
1:20 × 3 4:00
0:45 × 8 6:00
4:30 ÷ 3 1:30
1:20 ÷ 4 0:20
2:10 ÷ 5 0:26

Add a list of times: time sheet totals

To total a week, choose Add a list and type one time per line. Five days of 7:45, 8:15, 6:30, 7:50 and 5:20 add up to 35:40, which is 35.67 decimal hours, with an average of 7:08 a day. A line that starts with a minus sign is subtracted, so you can take off a break or an unpaid day.

A worked time sheet for one week

Here is a full week as the add a list mode would total it. Each day is the time between the start and the end, minus a 30 minute unpaid lunch. At $22.50 an hour, the week is 39 hours, or $877.50.

Time notation in the United States, Canada, the UK and Australia

  • United States and English Canada: people say and write times on the 12-hour clock with am and pm; timetables, healthcare and the military use the 24-hour clock.
  • United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand: both systems are common, and the 24-hour clock is standard on timetables.
  • Quebec and much of continental Europe: the 24-hour clock is more widely used in everyday writing.

This summary follows the Wikipedia articles on the 12-hour clock and the 24-hour clock. The calculator does not adjust for time zones or daylight saving time: use the time zone converter when two places are involved.

Elapsed time word problems to try

  3. A bus leaves at 11:50 am and the trip takes 3 hours 35 minutes. What time does it arrive? Answer: 3:25 pm.
  4. Practice lasted from 4:20 pm to 5:55 pm. How many minutes is that? Answer: 95 minutes.

Time calculator tips and common mistakes

Mistake Why it is wrong Correct
Typing 9:5 for 9:05 Minutes need two digits, and 9:5 is ambiguous 9:05
Reading 7.45 hours as 7:45 Decimal hours use hundredths of an hour, not minutes 7.45 h = 7:27
Adding 45 + 30 = 75 and stopping 75 minutes is more than an hour 75 min = 1:15
Subtracting without borrowing 20 − 45 is negative, so take 1 hour from the hours 14:80 − 9:45
Forgetting midnight A shift from 10 pm to 6 am ends the next day Add 24:00 to the end time

Everyday uses for a time calculator

  • Cooking: a roast that needs 2:45 and goes in at 4:30 pm comes out at 7:15 pm.
  • Travel: a flight that leaves at 9:50 pm and takes 3:25 lands at 1:15 am the next day, in the time of the place you left.
  • Work and study: total the hours on a time sheet or the minutes of homework in a week.
  • School: elapsed time is part of grade 3 and grade 4 measurement; practice with the free elapsed time worksheets and plan the day with a daily planner.
