Days Until Calculator for Holidays and Any Date

A days until calculator tells you how many days are left until a date. Pick Christmas, Halloween, Easter or any date, and it shows the days, weeks, months and hours remaining, counted from today on your own device, with the working shown step by step.

Use it for holidays, birthdays, trips, exams, due dates and deadlines. It repeats yearly dates such as birthdays, and it lists the next 20 holidays with a countdown beside each one.

Quick answer: Days until = the target date minus today. From October 8, 2026 there are 78 days until Christmas (Friday, December 25), which is 11 weeks and 1 day. Halloween is 23 days away and Thanksgiving is 49 days away.

How many days until a date: the formula

The days until calculator subtracts one calendar date from another. Days left = target date – today. Both dates are read as calendar dates, so the time of day does not change the day count: at 11 p.m. on October 8, Halloween is still 23 days away.

Weeks are days divided by 7, with the remainder as extra days. Months are whole calendar months from today, plus the leftover days. Hours are measured from now to midnight at the start of the target day in your time zone, so they also include a clock change if one falls in between.

Worked example 1: how many days until Christmas from October 8, 2026

October has 23 days left after the 8th, November has 30 and December contributes 25, so 23 + 30 + 25 = 78 days. That is 78 ÷ 7 = 11 weeks and 1 day. Counting whole months, October 8 to December 8 is 2 months and December 8 to December 25 is 17 days.

The days until calculator also finds 56 weekdays in that stretch, which is useful for work deadlines. At noon on October 8 the countdown to the start of Christmas Day is 77 days and 12 hours, which is 1,860 hours in time zones with no clock change on the way. In the US, clocks go back on November 1, so the answer there is 1,861 hours.

Worked example 2: a birthday on February 29

Tick Repeats every year and enter 2000-02-29. In a year with no February 29 the calculator uses March 1, so from October 8, 2026 the next birthday is March 1, 2027, which is 144 days away. In a leap year such as 2028 it uses February 29 itself.

Worked example 3: a fixed date, June 1, 2027

From October 8, 2026 to June 1, 2027 is 236 days: 23 more days of October, 30 of November, 31 of December, 31 of January, 28 of February, 31 of March, 30 of April, 31 of May and 1 of June.

Days until Christmas

Christmas Day is December 25, so the days until Christmas depend only on today’s date. The weekday changes every year, which matters for planning. The chart below shows how the countdown shrinks through 2026, and the table gives the weekday for the next five years.

Days until Halloween

Halloween is always October 31, so the days until Halloween from October 8, 2026 are 23. It falls on a Saturday in 2026, which is the best case for parties. The weekdays for the next five years are in the table.

Days until Thanksgiving

In the United States, Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, set by federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103). That is why the date moves between November 22 and November 28. From October 8, 2026 the days until Thanksgiving are 49, because Thanksgiving falls on November 26. Black Friday follows the next day, and Cyber Monday is four days later.

Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October, so its date is different; use A date I pick for it.

Days until Easter

Easter Sunday moves every year. It is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21, using the church’s tables of the moon, a method called the computus. The calculator uses the standard Gregorian computus, so the date is exact for any year. The next Easter after October 8, 2026 is March 28, 2027, which is 171 days away.

Days until New Year, Valentine’s Day and other dates

Fixed-date holidays have the same countdown every year. From October 8, 2026 it is 85 days until New Year’s Day (January 1, 2027), 129 days until Valentine’s Day (a Sunday) and 160 days until St. Patrick’s Day. Floating holidays move: Mother’s Day in the US is the second Sunday in May, Father’s Day the third Sunday in June, Memorial Day the last Monday in May and Labor Day the first Monday in September.

Days until the solstices

The June solstice is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, and the December solstice is the shortest. They are astronomical moments, not fixed dates, and the calendar date depends on your time zone. The calculator works out the exact moment and converts it to your local date. The table gives the moment in UTC.

These times come from the Wikipedia table of equinox and solstice dates, and the calculator’s own computation matches them within one minute for 2020 to 2036. For a US Eastern viewer, the December 2026 solstice (20:50 UTC) is 3:50 p.m. on December 21.

Common mistakes when counting days until a date

• Counting today. The count starts tomorrow: if today is the 8th, the 9th is day one.
• Using a rough month. Months have 28 to 31 days, so “2 months” is not a fixed number of days. Rely on the days figure.
• Ignoring time zones. The calculator uses your device clock. A date near midnight can differ for someone in another time zone.
• Forgetting clock changes. Hours include the extra or missing hour when daylight saving time starts or ends.
• Mixing calendar and working days. Weekdays are Monday to Friday only; public holidays are not removed.
