The story of Father’s Day
Father’s Day began in the United States in the early twentieth century. Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone, and she suggested a day for fathers in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. It took decades for the idea to spread, and it became a permanent national holiday in 1972.
Many families now use the day to thank anyone who plays a fatherly role. That can be a dad, a grandfather, a stepfather, an uncle or a family friend. The best gifts are often the simplest: a handmade card, a drawing or a list of reasons why you are grateful.
Wikipedia’s Father’s Day article describes the history and dates around the world.
What is in the Father’s Day activity pack?
Every activity uses the same list of 24 Father’s Day words, so children meet each word several times in different ways. The list is the heart of these Fathers Day worksheets: the word search hides it, the scramble mixes it up, the bingo calls it out and the writing prompt asks children to use it.
Father’s Day word search: three levels
The word search comes in easy, medium and hard grids, with 10, 14 and 18 words from the list.
The longest Father’s Day words are fishing, special and camping with 7 letters, and the shortest words are dad, tie and hug with 3.
Father’s Day vocabulary: words to talk about
Take a few minutes to talk about the words before children search for them. These eight are a good place to start:

| grill | 5 | A frame over a fire used for cooking outdoors |
