About spring: the holiday at a glance

A little background makes the words on the page mean more. Here are the basic facts that go with these spring worksheets:

When it starts Around March 20 in the Northern Hemisphere, at the spring equinox; around September 22 in the Southern Hemisphere
Day and night At the equinox, day and night are almost the same length
What changes Days get longer and warmer, and plants begin to grow
Animals Birds build nests, bees wake up and many animals have babies
Weather Showers, puddles and sometimes a rainbow
Colors Green, yellow, pink and pastel shades

The story of spring

Spring begins at the spring equinox, when the sun crosses the equator and day and night are nearly equal. After that the days grow longer, the soil warms and seeds begin to sprout. Trees bud, flowers bloom and many birds return from warmer places to build nests.

Spring is a good time for children to learn about growth and change. They can plant a seed, watch a caterpillar become a butterfly, chart the rain and notice how the daylight grows. Many holidays, such as Easter, Holi and St. Patrick’s Day, are celebrated in the spring too.

Wikipedia’s spring article explains the season and the equinox.

What is in the spring activity pack?

Every activity uses the same list of 24 spring words, so children meet each word several times in different ways. The list is the heart of these spring worksheets: the word search hides it, the scramble mixes it up, the bingo calls it out and the writing prompt asks children to use it.

spring word search: three levels

The word search comes in easy, medium and hard grids, with 10, 14 and 18 words from the list.

The longest spring word is caterpillar with 11 letters, and the shortest words are rain, bees, bird, nest, eggs, grow, kite and lamb with 4. Words that are too long for a grid are left out of that level, so every puzzle has a solution.

spring vocabulary: words to talk about

Take a few minutes to talk about the words before children search for them. These eight are a good place to start:

Word Letters What it means
blossom 7 A flower, especially on a fruit tree
seeds 5 Small parts of plants from which new plants grow
nest 4 A bird’s home made of twigs and grass
caterpillar 11 The larva of a butterfly or moth
ladybug 7 A small red beetle with black spots
puddle 6 A small pool of rain water
rainbow 7 An arch of colors that appears when sunlight shines through raindrops
bloom 5 To open into a flower

The other 16 words in the list are flowers, rain, umbrella, butterfly, bees, bird, eggs, tulip, daisy, garden, grow, sunshine, green, kite, lamb and march.

Spring activities for kids to do with the worksheets

Pair the printed pages with a hands-on idea, and the vocabulary sticks:

  • Grow a seed: plant a bean in a clear cup and draw it each day.
  • Magic seed story: use the prompt, “Plant a magic seed. What grows from it?”
  • Rain gauge: measure rainfall in a clear jar after each shower.
  • Butterfly life cycle: draw the four stages and compare with our life cycle worksheets.
  • Blossom acrostic: write BLOSSOM down the page and add a word for each letter.
