Word scramble printable for kids: a girl and a boy arranging jumbled letter tiles with picture clues of a tiger, an apple and a crab

A word scramble printable is a small puzzle with a big payoff: children rearrange a jumble of letters to spell a word, and a picture tells them what the word is. This free set has six themes (animals, fruit, school, ocean, farm and fall) with ten words each. Every row has a picture clue, scrambled letter tiles and a row of blanks for the answer, and page 2 of each PDF is a full answer key. Every word scramble printable is free to download and print.

Quick answer: print a theme, give the child a pencil and ask them to look at the picture, read the jumbled letters and write the word on the blanks. Short words suit ages 6 and 7, and longer words such as squirrel and mushroom suit ages 8 to 10. The answer key is on page 2.

How to solve a word scramble

  1. Look at the picture first. The picture tells you the word, so the letters only need to be put in order.
  2. Count the letters. The number of tiles matches the number of blanks, so you know how long the word is.
  3. Find the beginning. Look for letter pairs that often start a word, such as sh, ch or tr.
  4. Cross off letters. Write each letter on the blanks and cross it off the tiles as you use it.
  5. Check with the picture. Read the word aloud and see whether it matches the picture.

What a word scramble teaches

  • Spelling: children see every letter of a word and must put them in the right order.
  • Letter patterns: common pairs such as th, sh and ch become familiar.
  • Vocabulary: every word is paired with a picture, which helps new readers.
  • Persistence: a scrambled word feels hard at first and becomes easy after a few tries.

Ways to play with a word scramble for kids

  • Race: two children start with the same page and see who finishes first.
  • Cut and sort: write the scrambled letters on small paper tiles and let the child move them around.
  • Hint game: give a hint, such as the first letter, if a child gets stuck.
  • Write your own: after one page, children scramble the names of their favorite toys for a friend to solve.
  • Sentence step: ask children to say a sentence with each word they solved.

Tips for different ages

Six- and seven-year-olds do well with three- to five-letter words, such as pig, duck and apple. Eight- and nine-year-olds can try the longer words in the school and ocean pages. For the fall page, the words squirrel and mushroom are a challenge, so let a younger child use the answer key for those. A word scramble is a quiet activity that fits well in a morning routine or a waiting room.

How these sheets are made

Every sheet is generated by a program. Each word list was chosen for this page, with a picture for every word. A program scrambles the letters, checks that no word stays in its original order and prints the answer key from the same list. The pictures are Noto Emoji artwork from Google, used under the Apache License 2.0; the project is on GitHub. A credit line is printed on every page.

Start with the shortest word scramble printable and move to longer words as your child gets faster.
