Three kinds of percent problems
| Question | How to solve it | Example answer |
|---|---|---|
| What is 30% of 70? | Multiply: 0.30 × 70 | 21 |
| 12 is what percent of 48? | Divide, then × 100: 12 ÷ 48 × 100 | 25% |
| 15 is 30% of what number? | Divide by the percent: 15 ÷ 0.30 | 50 |
Almost every percentage question is one of these three, just dressed up in a different story. A quick mental trick: 10% of a number moves the decimal point one place left. From there, 20% is double, 5% is half, and 15% is 10% plus 5%. Our percent worksheets choose numbers that make these shortcuts work, so students can solve most problems without a calculator.
Finding the percent of a number
To find a percent of a number, change the percent to a decimal and multiply. 25% of 80 is 0.25 × 80 = 20. You can also think in fractions: 25% is 1/4, and a quarter of 80 is 20. The percent of a number level starts with friendly percents such as 10%, 25%, 50% and 75%, then moves to trickier ones like 15% and 40%. It is the best of our percent worksheets to start with.
Converting fractions, decimals and percents
Fractions, decimals and percents are three ways to write the same amount. To turn a decimal into a percent, multiply by 100 (0.35 becomes 35%). To turn a percent into a decimal, divide by 100 (8% becomes 0.08). For a fraction, divide the top by the bottom, then multiply by 100: 3/5 = 0.6 = 60%. To write a percent as a fraction, put it over 100 and simplify: 40% = 40/100 = 2/5. The fractions, decimals and percents worksheet mixes all four kinds of conversion on one page and pairs well with our fraction worksheets.
Percent increase and decrease
Percent change compares the change with the original amount: percent change = change ÷ original × 100. If a price goes from $70 to $77, the change is $7, and 7 ÷ 70 × 100 = 10%, a 10% increase. To increase an amount by a percent, add that percent of it: 160 increased by 10% is 160 + 16 = 176. To decrease, subtract instead. The percent increase and decrease level of these percent worksheets practices both directions with whole-number answers.
Discount, tax and tip
Shopping is where percentages appear most often in real life:
- Discount: find the percent of the price and subtract it. A $60 jacket at 25% off saves $15, so it costs $45.
- Sales tax: find the percent of the price and add it. A $40 game with 5% tax costs $40 + $2 = $42.
- Tip: the same as tax: a 20% tip on an $85 lunch is $17, so the total is $102.
- Original price: if a shirt costs $32 after a 20% discount, $32 is 80% of the original, so the original was $32 ÷ 0.8 = $40.
The discount, tax and tip worksheet uses all four, ten real-life percentage word problems per page.
Percent worksheets by grade
- 6th grade: understanding a percent as a rate per 100 and finding a percent of a quantity, which is standard 6.RP.A.3c in the Common Core grade 6 ratios and proportional relationships. Start these percent worksheets at levels 1, 2 and 4.
- 7th grade: multistep percent problems: tax, tips, discounts, markups, commissions and percent increase and decrease. Use levels 3, 5 and 6.

Common mistakes with percentages
- Forgetting to divide by 100: 8% is 0.08, not 0.8.
- Using the new amount instead of the original when finding percent change.
- Subtracting the percent instead of the amount: a 20% discount on $50 is $10 off, not $20.
- Thinking a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease gets you back where you started. It does not: 100 becomes 150, then 75.
