Cursive alphabet A to Z: capital and small letters
The cursive alphabet chart puts all 26 letters on one page, each with its capital and small form and the print letter in the corner, followed by a second page to trace. Keep it on the desk while working through the letter pages. A few things to point out to beginners:
- Small b, o, v and w finish high, so the next letter joins from the top rather than the baseline.
- Small f, g, j, p, q, y and z have tails that drop below the baseline.
- Small r and s look quite different from their print shapes, so they are worth extra practice.
- Capital letters change the most from print. Learn them once the small letters join easily.
A simple order for learning cursive
| Step | Letters | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Undercurve letters | i t w u r s | They all start with the same upward swing. |
| 2. Loop letters | e l j h k f b | Tall and low loops use the same motion. |
| 3. Downcurve letters | a c d g o q | They start like a c, curving back and down. |
| 4. Overcurve letters | n m x y z v | A hump over the top joins them together. |
| 5. Capitals | Whole alphabet | Learn capitals once lowercase joins feel easy. |
Many teachers use this kind of grouping because letters that start with the same stroke are easier to learn together. Click a group to print cursive writing worksheets for just those letters.
Cursive writing practice for adults
Cursive is not just for children. Adults use these cursive writing worksheets to bring back neat joined handwriting, slow down for mindful writing, or help a child by learning alongside them. Choose pangrams and sayings: sentences such as “The five boxing wizards jump quickly” use every letter of the alphabet, so one page practises all 26 joins. Small letters and gray lines make the page look grown-up.
