Why number tracing worksheets help

Recognizing a number and writing it are two different skills. Tracing builds the hand movements for each numeral, so children can later write answers to sums without stopping to remember how a 5 or an 8 is made. It also fixes common reversals, like writing 3, 7 or 9 backwards, before they become habits.

How to form each number

  • 0: start at the top and go around to the left, all the way back to the start.
  • 1: start at the top and pull straight down.
  • 2: around like a hook, slant down to the left, then across the bottom.
  • 3: around to the middle, then around again to the bottom.
  • 4: down, across, then a second line straight down through it.
  • 5: down, around the belly, then add the flat hat on top.
  • 6: curve down from the top and close the loop at the bottom.
  • 7: across the top, then slant down.
  • 8: make an S, then slant back up to where you started.
  • 9: a small loop at the top, then a straight line down.

Number tracing worksheets with number words

Turn on Add the number word in the generator and every number gets a second tracing row with its word: 5, then “five”. Children practice writing the numeral and reading the word on the same page, which links the symbol, the word and the quantity. The number words work for every number up to 100, so you can make number tracing worksheets from “one” to “twenty” for kindergarten or up to “one hundred” for first grade. Start with 1 to 10 and add the teen numbers once the first ten feel easy.

Number tracing worksheets by age

  • Age 3 to 4 (preschool): tracing numbers 0 to 5 in Extra large print, one or two numbers a day, with lots of counting of real objects.
  • Age 4 to 5 (pre-K): number tracing worksheets 0 to 10 in Large print, plus the number words for 1 to 10.
  • Age 5 to 6 (kindergarten): numbers 0 to 20, including the teen numbers. Writing numbers from 0 to 20 is part of the kindergarten counting standards in the Common Core.
  • Age 6 and up: numbers to 30 or more in Medium or Small print, and number words for numbers like 24 (“twenty-four”).

The tricky teen numbers

Teen numbers are where many children slip up: they hear “fourteen” and write 41, because the four is said first. Tracing 11 to 20 in order helps, and so does saying “one ten and four ones” while writing 14. Print the 11 to 20 sheet above and point out that every teen number starts with a 1.

Tips for number writing practice

  • Count and write: after tracing a 6, count out six objects so the numeral means something.
  • Watch for reversals: 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are the numbers children most often write backwards. Tracing a few extra rows helps.
  • Go in order: trace 0 to 10 first, then the teen numbers, which are a 1 followed by a digit they already know.
  • Keep it short: two or three numbers a day is plenty.

How many digits does a child write when tracing numbers?

We counted every digit in the numbers from 1 to 20 and from 1 to 30, to show how much writing a child does on each sheet:

Digit Times written when tracing 1 to 20 Times written when tracing 1 to 30
0 2 3
1 12 13
2 3 13
3 2 4
4 2 3
5 2 3
6 2 3
7 2 3
8 2 3
9 2 3
All digits 31 51

Tracing 1 to 20 means writing 31 digits, and 1 is the most common because it appears in every teen number: it is written 12 times. Tracing 1 to 30 means writing 51 digits. Children get plenty of practice with the 1 and the 2, and need extra practice on the digits that appear less often, such as 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Frequently asked questions

12 quick answers

Is tracing numbers better than copying them?

For beginners, yes. Tracing numbers shows the exact path of each stroke, so the movement becomes automatic before children write numbers freehand on the empty line.

Are these number tracing worksheets free?

Yes. Yes. Print number tracing worksheets as often as you want, at home or school, without an account.

Can I print tracing numbers 1 to 20?

Yes. Choose From 1 and to 20 in the generator. Each number gets a dark example and a tracing row, several numbers to a page.

At what age should children trace numbers?

Many children start tracing numbers at age three or four and write 0 to 10 on their own in kindergarten. Writing numbers to 20 is a kindergarten goal in the Common Core standards.

Why does my child write numbers backwards?

Reversals are very common until about age seven. Regular tracing, starting each number at the top, and saying the steps out loud help children form numbers the right way.

What size numbers are best for preschool?

Use Extra large or Large for three and four year olds. Move to Medium once children trace smoothly.

Can number tracing worksheets include number words?

Yes. Turn on Add the number word and each number gets a row for its word, such as 7 and “seven”. It works for every number up to 100.

Why does my child write 41 instead of 14?

Because we say “four-teen”, the four is heard first. Tracing teen numbers in order and saying “one ten and four ones” helps children put the 1 first.

How many numbers fit on one page?

It depends on the size. Extra large fits two or three numbers per page, while Medium fits four or more. With number words turned on, each number takes an extra row.

Can I print the worksheets on A4?

Yes. Choose Letter or A4 before downloading.

Where can I download free number tracing worksheets?

Open any card in the PDF section above, choose US Letter or A4, then print or save the PDF. They are free and need no account.

How many numbers should a child trace a day?

Two or three numbers a day is plenty for a preschooler. Older children can trace a full row of 1 to 10 in five to ten minutes.
