The letter B sound
B says /b/, the sound at the start of ball, bear and bus. Lips press together and pop open with a little voice behind them; put a hand on the throat to feel it buzz. Keep the sound short, /b/ not “buh”, so it blends cleanly into words like bat and bed. B also comes at the end of words such as cab, web and tub, and at the start of blends like bl (blue) and br (bread).
B is for ball: letter B words for kids
Words that start with B: ball, bear, banana, bus, bed, bird, boat, book, butterfly, bubble.
B inside or at the end: cab, web, tub, robot, rabbit, crab.
The color page uses ball, bear, banana and bus, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.
Letter B at a glance
| Place in the alphabet | 2nd of 26, after A and before C |
|---|---|
| Type | Consonant |
| Uppercase shape | Straight lines and curves |
| Often confused with | d, p and q |
| Scrabble tile value | 3 points |
Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines and curves, like B, combine both skills, so practice the separate strokes first.
How to write B and b
- Uppercase B: A tall line down, then back to the top for two bumps: one to the middle and one to the bottom.
- Lowercase b: A tall line down, then bounce back up and around to make the tummy on the right.
Lowercase b is the most reversed letter in early writing because it mirrors d. Teach b as “bat, then ball”: draw the tall line (the bat) first, then the ball on its right. Form it from the top every time, and keep a b/d reminder card on the table rather than correcting every reversal on the page.
Letter B tracing and the rest of the pack
- Trace: letter B tracing with arrows to follow, then uppercase B and lowercase b on their own.
- Find the letter: circle every B and b hidden among similar-looking letters, then count them.
- Letter maze: color the B squares to make a path from start to finish.
- Color: color the big Bb, trace the B words and draw something that starts with B.

Letter B worksheets kindergarten teachers can use
In kindergarten, b is often taught early so children can read bat, bed, big, bug and bus. The find-the-letter page mixes in d, p and q on purpose, which builds the visual checking that stops reversals. The letter B worksheets classes use alongside reading practice work best when children say the sound as they trace, then read two or three b words from the color page.
Recognizing and naming every letter is part of the kindergarten Common Core reading foundations standards (RF.K.1.D). For the history of the letter itself, see B on Wikipedia.

Letter B worksheets: frequently asked questions

Preschool and kindergarten, usually ages 3 to 6. Kindergarten expects children to recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core RF.K.1.D).
How many days should we spend on the letter B?
A letter-of-the-week plan uses one page a day: trace on Monday, find on Tuesday, the maze on Wednesday and coloring on Thursday, with Friday for review or a craft.
How do I stop my child mixing up b and d?
Reversals are normal until about age 7. Use one trick consistently, such as “bat before ball” for b, and practice b on its own for a week before mixing it with d.

Two consonants said together, such as bl in blue and br in bread. Introduce them after children read simple b words confidently.

Yes. The maker on this page can build packs for any letters, like S, A, T, P, I, N, or the whole alphabet.
