Each of these letter G worksheets is a one-page PDF; the find and maze pages add an answer key. Press Customize to change the colors or paper size in the maker on this page.

The letter G sound

Hard g says /g/, as in goat, gift, grapes and garden. The back of the tongue lifts to the roof of the mouth and the voice is on. Before e, i or y, g sometimes says /j/, as in giraffe, gem and gym; that soft g can wait until later. G also ends many short words (bag, dog, pig) and forms blends such as gr (green) and gl (glue).

G is for goat: letter G words for kids

Words that start with G: goat, gift, grapes, garden, girl, goose, gate, guitar, gorilla, glove.

G inside or at the end: bag, dog, pig, wagon, tiger, frog.

The color page uses goat, gift, grapes and garden, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

Letter G at a glance

Place in the alphabet 7th of 26, after F and before H
Type Consonant
Uppercase shape Straight lines and curves
Often confused with C, q and 6
Scrabble tile value 2 points

Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines and curves, like G, combine both skills, so practice the separate strokes first.

How to write G and g

  • Uppercase G: Make a big C, then go up a little and in to make a short shelf.
  • Lowercase g: Curve around like a c, go up, then down below the line and hook to the left.

Uppercase G is a C with a short shelf: curve around like C, then go in and across. Lowercase g starts with a c curve, goes up, then dives below the baseline with a hook to the left. The tail below the line is new for many children, so point to the bottom writing line before they begin.

Letter G tracing and the rest of the pack

  1. Trace: letter G tracing with arrows to follow, then uppercase G and lowercase g on their own.
  2. Find the letter: circle every G and g hidden among similar-looking letters, then count them.
  3. Letter maze: color the G squares to make a path from start to finish.
  4. Color: color the big Gg, trace the G words and draw something that starts with G.

Letter G activities for preschool

A letter G week plan

  • Thursday: color “G is for goat”, read goat, gift, grapes and garden aloud and finish with Garden hunt.
  • Friday: write G and g from memory, look for G in a favorite picture book and reprint any page that felt tricky.

Letter G worksheets kindergarten teachers can use

Kindergarten readers meet hard g in bag, big, dig, dog, got and leg, and the sight word go. The letter G worksheets teachers use help children control the descender, the part of g that hangs below the line, which also appears in j, p, q and y.

Recognizing and naming every letter is part of the kindergarten Common Core reading foundations standards (RF.K.1.D). For the history of the letter itself, see G on Wikipedia.

Preschool and kindergarten, usually ages 3 to 6. Kindergarten expects children to recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core RF.K.1.D).

How many days should we spend on the letter G?

A letter-of-the-week plan uses one page a day: trace on Monday, find on Tuesday, the maze on Wednesday and coloring on Thursday, with Friday for review or a craft.

Why does g sometimes sound like j?

Before e, i or y, g is often soft and says /j/, as in giraffe and gym. Many common words still use hard g, like get and give.
