The letter K sound

K says /k/, the same sound as hard c, as in kite, key, king and kangaroo. The back of the tongue touches the roof of the mouth and releases a puff of air. As a rule of thumb, k is used before e and i (kid, keep) and c before a, o and u (cat, cot, cup). At the end of short words, the sound is often spelled ck, as in duck and sock. In kn words like knee and knot, the k is silent.

K is for kite: letter K words for kids

Words that start with K: kite, key, kangaroo, king, kitten, koala, kettle, kiwi, kayak, kick.

K inside or at the end: duck, sock, book, milk, pink, monkey.

The color page uses kite, key, kangaroo and king, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

Letter K at a glance

Place in the alphabet 11th of 26, after J and before L
Type Consonant
Uppercase shape Straight lines only
Often confused with R, X and h
Scrabble tile value 5 points

Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines, like K, are usually easier to start with than curved ones.

How to write K and k

  • Uppercase K: A tall line down, then a slant in to the middle and a slant out to the bottom.
  • Lowercase k: A tall line down, then a small slant in and a small slant out, starting at the middle line.

Uppercase K is a tall line, then a slanted line in to the middle and a slanted line back out. Lowercase k has a tall line and the two slants meet at the middle line, not halfway up the tall line. Saying “down, in, out” helps children keep the slants touching.

Letter K tracing and the rest of the pack

  1. Trace: letter K tracing with arrows to follow, then uppercase K and lowercase k on their own.
  2. Find the letter: circle every K and k hidden among similar-looking letters, then count them.
  3. Letter maze: color the K squares to make a path from start to finish.
  4. Color: color the big Kk, trace the K words and draw something that starts with K.

Letter K activities for preschool

Short, hands-on games make the letter K worksheets stick. Try one a day alongside the printed pages:

  • Kite craft: make a paper kite and write K on its tail bows.
  • Key hunt: hide paper keys around the room; each one has a letter, and only K keys open the “treasure box”.
  • Kangaroo hops: hop like a kangaroo to each K card on the floor.
  • Kitchen K: find k sounds in the kitchen: kettle, cookie, ketchup, cake.

A letter K week plan

  • Tuesday: work through the find-the-letter page, count how many you circled, and move on to Key hunt.
  • Wednesday: solve the letter K maze, then play Kangaroo hops.
  • Thursday: color “K is for kite”, read kite, key, kangaroo and king aloud and finish with Kitchen K.
  • Friday: write K and k from memory, look for K in a favorite picture book and reprint any page that felt tricky.

Letter K worksheets kindergarten teachers can use

Kindergarten readers meet k in kid, kit, kin and kick, and the ck ending in words like back, duck and sock. The letter K worksheets teachers use pair well with a c-or-k sort: say a word and let your child guess which letter starts it.

Recognizing and naming every letter is part of the kindergarten Common Core reading foundations standards (RF.K.1.D). For the history of the letter itself, see K on Wikipedia.

What age are letter K worksheets for?

Preschool and kindergarten, usually ages 3 to 6. Kindergarten expects children to recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core RF.K.1.D).

A letter-of-the-week plan uses one page a day: trace on Monday, find on Tuesday, the maze on Wednesday and coloring on Thursday, with Friday for review or a craft.

When do you use c and when do you use k?

Usually k before e, i and y, and c before a, o and u. Children learn this spelling pattern gradually through first grade.
