The letter M sound

M says /m/, as in moon, mouse, milk and map. Lips close and the sound hums through the nose, so it can be stretched: mmmoon. Because it is easy to say and hear, m is often taught in the first group of letters. It appears at the end of words too (ham, drum, swim) and forms the blends sm (smile) and -mp (lamp).

M is for moon: letter M words for kids

Words that start with M: moon, mouse, milk, map, monkey, mitten, mop, muffin, mushroom, motorcycle.

M inside or at the end: ham, drum, swim, lemon, camel, hammer.

The color page uses moon, mouse, milk and map, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines, like M, are usually easier to start with than curved ones.

How to write M and m

  • Uppercase M: A tall line down, back to the top, slant down to the middle, slant back up, and a tall line down.
  • Lowercase m: A short line down, back up, then two humps side by side.

Uppercase M is two tall lines joined by a V in the middle: down, up, slant down, slant up, down. Lowercase m is a line with two humps. Children sometimes add a third hump or stop at one (making n), so count “one hump, two humps” while tracing.

Letter M tracing and the rest of the pack

  1. Trace: letter M tracing with arrows to follow, then uppercase M and lowercase m on their own.
  2. Find the letter: circle every M and m hidden among similar-looking letters, then count them.
  3. Letter maze: color the M squares to make a path from start to finish.
  4. Color: color the big Mm, trace the M words and draw something that starts with M.

Letter M worksheets kindergarten teachers can use

Kindergarten readers use m in mad, man, map, mat, mom, mop and mud, and the sight words me, my and make. The letter M worksheets teachers use go well with blending practice because /m/ can be held while children add the next sound.

Recognizing and naming every letter is part of the kindergarten Common Core reading foundations standards (RF.K.1.D). For the history of the letter itself, see M on Wikipedia.
