Each of these letter V worksheets is a one-page PDF; the find and maze pages add an answer key. Press Customize to change the colors or paper size in the maker on this page.

The letter V sound

V says /v/, as in van, vase, violin and vest. The top teeth rest on the bottom lip like f, but the voice buzzes; touch the throat to feel it. English words almost never end in v: they add a silent e, as in have, give, love and five. So v is a letter to listen for at the beginning and middle of words.

V is for van: letter V words for kids

Words that start with V: van, vase, violin, vest, vet, vegetables, volcano, vulture, valentine, vacuum.

V inside or at the end: five, glove, river, seven, oven, cave.

The color page uses van, vase, violin and vest, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

Letter V at a glance

Place in the alphabet 22nd of 26, after U and before W
Type Consonant
Uppercase shape Straight lines only
Often confused with u, y and W
Scrabble tile value 4 points

Grouping letters by shape helps handwriting: letters made of straight lines, like V, are usually easier to start with than curved ones.

How to write V and v

  • Uppercase V: Slant down to a point at the bottom, then slant back up.
  • Lowercase v: The same shape, small, from the middle line.

Uppercase V and lowercase v have the same shape: a slanted line down to a point, then a slanted line back up. The only difference is size. Make sure the two lines meet in a sharp point at the bottom; a rounded bottom turns v into u.

Letter V tracing and the rest of the pack

  1. Trace: letter V tracing with arrows to follow, then uppercase V and lowercase v on their own.
  2. Find the letter: circle every V and v hidden among similar-looking letters, then count them.
  3. Letter maze: color the V squares to make a path from start to finish.
  4. Color: color the big Vv, trace the V words and draw something that starts with V.

Letter V worksheets kindergarten teachers can use

Kindergarten readers meet v in van, vat, vet and in the color words and numbers violet and five, seven. The letter V worksheets teachers use also help children hear the difference between /v/ and /f/, which are made in the same place in the mouth.

Recognizing and naming every letter is part of the kindergarten Common Core reading foundations standards (RF.K.1.D). For the history of the letter itself, see V on Wikipedia.

What age are letter V worksheets for?

Preschool and kindergarten, usually ages 3 to 6. Kindergarten expects children to recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core RF.K.1.D).

How many days should we spend on the letter V?

A letter-of-the-week plan uses one page a day: trace on Monday, find on Tuesday, the maze on Wednesday and coloring on Thursday, with Friday for review or a craft.

Why don’t English words end in v?

Spelling rules add a silent e after v at the end of words, as in have and love. Only a few slang or borrowed words end in v.
