The coordinate plane is a flat grid made by two number lines that cross at zero: the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y-axis. Every point on it has an address, an ordered pair (x, y). Use the generator above to print free coordinate plane mystery pictures (plot the points, join them, and a picture appears), 4 quadrant coordinate planes, plotting-points and write-the-coordinates sheets with answer keys, or play with the interactive coordinate plane below. Our coordinate plane worksheets include coordinate plane mystery pictures that reveal an image once every point is plotted.

Quick answer: a coordinate plane is a grid made by the x-axis and y-axis, and every point on it is named by an ordered pair (x, y). This page has free coordinate plane printables: mystery pictures for quadrant 1 or all four quadrants, blank coordinate planes, and plotting and write-the-coordinates worksheets with answer keys, all as PDFs. Love grid pictures? Try the pixel art and symmetry worksheets too. This page has free coordinate plane worksheets as PDFs with answers: mystery pictures in quadrant 1 or all four quadrants, blank grids and plotting sheets. Updated October 2026.

Interactive coordinate plane

Click anywhere on the grid to plot a point and see its ordered pair and quadrant. Plot a few points and press Connect the dots to draw your own shape. Then try the Find the point game: read the ordered pair and click the right spot. How many can you find in a row?

How to plot a point

  1. Start at the origin, the point (0, 0) where the axes cross.
  2. Read the first number, x. Move right if it is positive, left if it is negative.
  3. Read the second number, y. Move up if it is positive, down if it is negative.
  4. Draw a dot where you stop. For (3, −2), go 3 right and 2 down.

A handy way to remember the order: you have to walk along the hall (x) before you can go up or down the stairs (y). The ordered pair is always written (x, y), across first.

The four quadrants

Quadrant Where Signs Example
I Top right (+, +) (4, 6)
II Top left (−, +) (−4, 6)
III Bottom left (−, −) (−4, −6)
IV Bottom right (+, −) (4, −6)

The quadrants are numbered counterclockwise, starting at the top right. Points that land on an axis, like (0, 5) or (−3, 0), are not in any quadrant.

Coordinate plane mystery pictures

Mystery pictures turn plotting practice into a puzzle. Children plot each ordered pair in order and join it to the one before with a ruler. When the list says • new line, they lift the pencil and start a fresh line at the next point. The picture only appears at the end, so children are motivated to plot every point carefully. There are six first-quadrant pictures (star, house, heart, fish, rocket and sailboat) for grade 5, and six four-quadrant pictures (star, heart, tree, cat face, arrow and butterfly) with negative numbers for grade 6. The answer key shows the finished picture.

First quadrant or four quadrants?

  • First quadrant (grade 5): both numbers are 0 or more, so children only move right and up. Start here. For full plotting-points practice, see our coordinate grid worksheets.
  • Four quadrants (grade 6): negative numbers join in. Children move left and down too, and learn how the signs tell you the quadrant.
  • Small or bigger grids: choose −5 to 5 for a first look at negatives, or −10 to 10 for more challenge.

Coordinate plane activities

  • Design your own mystery picture: draw a shape on a blank four-quadrant grid, list its corner points, and swap with a friend.
  • Coordinate battleships: each player hides ships on a four-quadrant plane and takes turns calling ordered pairs.
  • Reflections: plot a shape in Quadrant I, then change the sign of x to reflect it into Quadrant II.
  • Treasure hunt: give directions as ordered pairs to find a hidden “treasure” point.
  • Distance on a line: find how far apart (2, 3) and (2, −4) are by counting along the grid.

Coordinate plane worksheet: points in the coordinate plane with answers

Use this table as a points in the coordinate plane worksheet or a short coordinate plane worksheet with answers. Cover the last two columns, plot each point on a printed grid, then check:

Point Move from the origin Where it lies
(3, 4) 3 right, 4 up Quadrant I
(-2, 5) 2 left, 5 up Quadrant II
(-6, -1) 6 left, 1 down Quadrant III
(4, -3) 4 right, 3 down Quadrant IV
(0, 7) 0 right, 7 up on an axis
(-5, 0) 5 left, 0 up on an axis
(8, 2) 8 right, 2 up Quadrant I
(-4, -4) 4 left, 4 down Quadrant III

This page is also searched as coordinate plane worksheets printable, coordinate plane worksheets pdf, free coordinate plane worksheets, coordinate plane practice problems and a coordinate planes printable. All of them are the free PDFs above, with answers. Grade 5 graphs points in the first quadrant only (5.G.A.1), so for fifth graders choose the first-quadrant pictures; grade 6 uses all four quadrants.

Reading and writing ordered pairs

An ordered pair always lists x first and y second, so (3, 4) is not the same point as (4, 3). A good memory trick is that you walk along the street before you climb the stairs: move along the x-axis first, then up or down the y-axis. When a picture asks you to join the points in order, draw a line from each dot to the next one and lift your pencil when the list says to start a new shape. Mystery pictures are the most popular way to practice because the final picture shows right away whether every point was plotted correctly. If a line looks wrong, check the signs of the two numbers before the order.

Tips for teaching the four quadrants

Start with quadrant I, where both numbers are positive, and add the negative numbers once children can plot points with confidence. The quadrants are numbered counterclockwise starting at the top right, and the signs follow a pattern: (+, +), (-, +), (-, -) and (+, -). Print a blank four-quadrant grid and ask children to label the axes and write one example point in each quadrant before they start a mystery picture.

Frequently asked questions

11 quick answers

Which coordinate plane worksheets suit 5th grade?

Start with first-quadrant coordinate plane mystery pictures, which match the 5th grade standards, then move to all four quadrants in 6th grade.

What is a coordinate plane?

A coordinate plane is a grid formed by a horizontal number line (the x-axis) and a vertical number line (the y-axis) that cross at the origin, (0, 0). Every point on the plane is named by an ordered pair (x, y).

What is an ordered pair?

An ordered pair is two numbers in parentheses, like (5, 2). The first number is the x-coordinate (how far left or right) and the second is the y-coordinate (how far up or down). The order matters: (5, 2) and (2, 5) are different points.

What are the four quadrants of a coordinate plane?

The axes split the plane into four quadrants, numbered I to IV counterclockwise from the top right. In Quadrant I both coordinates are positive, in II x is negative, in III both are negative, and in IV y is negative.

How do you make a coordinate plane mystery picture?

Choose “Mystery picture” in the generator, pick a picture and first quadrant or four quadrants, and print. Children plot the ordered pairs in order and connect them with straight lines, starting a new line where the list says so.

What grade learns the coordinate plane?

Graphing points in the first quadrant is part of grade 5 math (Common Core 5.G). Grade 6 extends it to all four quadrants with negative numbers (6.NS).

Can I print a blank coordinate plane?

Yes. Choose the blank coordinate plane in the generator, pick quadrant 1 or four quadrants and a grid of −5 to 5 or −10 to 10, and print one or several grids on a page. Students can use it for their own coordinate plane drawing or for graphing lines.

Is the origin in a quadrant?

No. The origin (0, 0) and every point on the x-axis or y-axis lie between quadrants, so they do not belong to any quadrant.

Are these coordinate plane printables free?

Yes. Every grid, mystery picture and worksheet costs nothing, and you never need an account to download it. Print on Letter or A4 paper.

Where can I download free coordinate plane worksheets?

Open any page in the gallery above, choose US Letter or A4, then print or save the PDF. They are free and have answers where needed.

Which quadrant is (-3, 5) in?

It is in Quadrant II: the x value is negative (left) and the y value is positive (up).
