Dance floor bingo: what is on the cards

The starter list has 28 squares in three groups. Some are certain to happen at any sangeet (a family group dance, the DJ playing a request), and some are rare (a flash mob), so a line is possible but not guaranteed.

Group Squares Squares on the starter list
Performances 9 Couple’s performance, Family group dance, Solo performance, Cousins perform a skit, Surprise flash mob, Dance-off between two sides, Bride dances with her mother, Groom’s friends take over, Encore!
Styles and steps 11 Bhangra moves, Garba circle forms, Naagin dance, Everyone does the same step, Uncle does the “bulb” step, Dancing in a train line, Someone breakdances, Someone dances with a dupatta, Slow song for couples, Someone dances barefoot, Lift the bride or groom
Floor moments 8 Dad dances, Grandma dances, Kids take over the floor, DJ plays a request, Phone torches in the air, A song is played twice, Stage lights change color, Someone forgets the steps

How to play sangeet bingo

  1. Give every guest a card at the entrance, with a pen or a stick-on dot.
  2. Guests watch the dance floor and mark a square when the moment happens.
  3. A square counts only if the guest sees it, and photos on a phone count as proof.
  4. The first guest with a full line shows her card to the host and shouts “Bingo!”.
  5. The host checks the squares, and the emcee announces the winner during a break in the music.

How many moments before someone wins?

In sangeet bingo the dance floor decides the order of the squares. This simulation assumes the moments that happen are drawn from the starter list of 28, and shows the chance that at least one guest has a completed line after a number of moments, with 10, 20 and 40 guests.

Guests with a card After 6 moments After 8 After 10 After 12 After 14
10 guests 4% 17% 49% 82% 99%
20 guests 6% 30% 71% 97% 100%
40 guests 12% 52% 91% 100% 100%

After 10 moments, a line is likely with 20 guests, and after 12 moments it is almost certain. A sangeet usually has many more than that, so a good host adds a prize for the four corners and the full card.

Sangeet games to play alongside the dancing

Sangeet games should add to the dance, not stop it. Bingo is a good fit because it is played by watching, so nobody has to leave the floor or their seat. Guests who do not dance have something to do, and the dancers do not know they are part of the game, which makes the moments more natural.

Sangeet bingo for the bride’s and the groom’s sides

For a bit of friendly competition, give guests on the bride’s side and the groom’s side different colors of pens. The first side to complete a line wins a small trophy, and the banter keeps going all evening. For a tambola version of the same rivalry, see wedding tambola.

Mehendi sangeet games when both events are combined

Mehendi sangeet games are often played in a combined evening, where the henna artists work while the music plays. Bingo is useful because guests with henna on their hands can watch and call out the moments, and a helper can mark the card for them. See also mehendi tambola.

Wedding dance games for all ages

Wedding dance games should include the children and the elders. Give the kids the 3 by 3 card, and the elders the 5 by 5 in large print. The rest of the evening can go to a dance-off between the two sides. For the traditions of the sangeet, see Wikipedia’s sangeet article.

Run sangeet dance bingo in six steps

  1. Edit the squares: add moments that fit your family, such as the name of a song or an uncle who always dances.
  2. Print: print one card for each guest, using different colors for the two sides if you like.
  3. At the entrance: give a card and a pen to each guest.
  4. Announce: the emcee explains the game and reminds guests to mark only what they see.
  5. During the night: the host collects the cards of guests who shout bingo and checks them.
  6. Prize time: announce the winners between two dance numbers.

Prize ideas for sangeet bingo

  • A pair of sparkly earrings or a bow tie for the first line
  • A small speaker or a pair of headphones for the four corners
  • A box of sweets for the full card
  • A “best dancer” trophy for the guest with the most squares marked
  • A set of glow sticks for every winner

Tips for the host

  • Choose squares that are likely to happen, so that most guests can mark a few.
  • Ask the DJ to join in, by playing a request or a song twice on purpose.
  • Keep the pens simple: a dot sticker is easier to use in the dark than a pen.
  • Have the photographer take pictures of the winners with their cards.
