The nine activities in our spelling worksheets

Activity What children do Why it works
Rainbow write Write each word three times in red, blue and green Repetition with a purpose; the color change keeps attention
Look, say, cover, write, check Study the word, hide it, write it from memory, then check Builds visual memory, the core of confident spelling
ABC order Put the words in alphabetical order Makes children look closely at every letter
Missing letters Fill the gaps (mostly vowels), then write the whole word Targets the vowel sounds that cause most spelling mistakes
Word scramble Unscramble the letter tiles A puzzle that checks letter order
Word shape boxes Fit each word into boxes shaped like its tall, short and hanging letters Connects spelling with the outline of the word
Write sentences Use each word in a sentence Shows the child knows what the word means
Practice test Write each word as it is read aloud, plus a bonus sentence A real test rehearsal; the answer page lists the words
Word pyramids Build each word one letter at a time Slows down and sounds out long words

A weekly routine with spelling practice worksheets

  • Monday: read the list together, then do Look, say, cover, write, check.
  • Tuesday: Rainbow write and Word shapes.
  • Wednesday: Missing letters and ABC order.
  • Thursday: Word scramble, Sentences and a round of the Listen and spell game.
  • Friday: the Practice test. Any word spelled wrong goes onto next week’s list.

Print the whole week of spelling worksheets at once with the Full packet option, staple them, and the routine runs itself.

Built-in lists in the spelling worksheet generator

Every list focuses on one spelling pattern, so children learn a rule instead of memorizing random words. Pick a list and all nine spelling worksheets fill with its words:

  • Grade 1: short a, e, i, o and u words (CVC words) and first sight words.
  • Grade 2: sh, ch and th digraphs, consonant blends, and long a, e, i and o spellings.
  • Grade 3: r-controlled vowels, oo/ou/ow, -ed and -ing endings, compound words, contractions and plurals.
  • Grade 4: homophones, prefixes (un-, re-, dis-), suffixes (-ful, -less, -ly), silent letters and tricky high-frequency words.
  • Grade 5: -tion and -sion, Greek and Latin roots, commonly confused words, -ous and -ive, and science vocabulary.

Tips for getting the most from spelling worksheets

  • Keep lists short. Eight to twelve words a week is plenty for most children; quality beats quantity.
  • Group by pattern. Words that share a spelling rule (like -ight) are easier to learn together.
  • Say it, spell it, say it. Saying the word before and after spelling it aloud links the sounds to the letters.
  • Use the words. Children remember words they use in their own writing much better than words they only copy.
  • Celebrate progress. Track how many words are right each Friday and watch the number grow.
  • Teach the patterns. English spelling looks random but follows many patterns; the English orthography article explains where the odd spellings come from. By grade 2, children are expected to generalize learned spelling patterns (Common Core L.2.2d).

Spelling rules worksheets teach patterns that apply to many words. Add words that follow a rule to your list, and use the missing letters activity to practice them:

Spelling rule Example
Double the last letter before -ing when a short vowel is followed by one consonant hop → hopping, run → running
Drop the silent e before -ing make → making, hope → hoping
Change y to i before -ed or -es after a consonant carry → carried, baby → babies
Add -es after s, x, z, ch and sh box → boxes, church → churches
Change f to v and add -es for many words ending in f or fe leaf → leaves, knife → knives
I before e, except after c believe, receive

What is rainbow writing?

Rainbow writing means writing each spelling word several times in different colors. Our rainbow write page has a column for red, blue and green so children write every word three times.
