The letter L sound
L says /l/, as in lion, leaf, lamp and lemon. The tip of the tongue rests behind the top teeth while the voice keeps going, so it can be stretched: lllion. L is also common at the end of words (ball, bell, doll), where it is often doubled, and it forms blends such as bl, cl, fl, gl, pl and sl. Some young children say /w/ for /l/ for a while; this usually sorts itself out with time.
L is for lion: letter L words for kids
Words that start with L: lion, leaf, lamp, lemon, ladder, ladybug, log, lollipop, lizard, lunch.
L inside or at the end: ball, bell, doll, owl, apple, pencil.
The color page uses lion, leaf, lamp and lemon, so children trace each word and color the matching letter.

How to write L and l
- Uppercase L: A tall line down, then a line across the bottom to the right.
- Lowercase l: One tall line straight down.
Uppercase L is a line down and a line across the bottom. Lowercase l is a single tall line from the top line to the baseline. It looks like uppercase I in some fonts and like the number 1, so the find-the-letter page asks children to look closely at each tall line.

What age are letter L worksheets for?
Preschool and kindergarten, usually ages 3 to 6. Kindergarten expects children to recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core RF.K.1.D).
How many days should we spend on the letter L?
A letter-of-the-week plan uses one page a day: trace on Monday, find on Tuesday, the maze on Wednesday and coloring on Thursday, with Friday for review or a craft.
Why does my child say w instead of l?
Many children replace /l/ with /w/ while their speech develops. If it continues past age 6, a speech therapist can check it.
How can children tell lowercase l from capital I?
Look at the whole word and the font. School fonts often give capital I crossbars to make the difference clear.
Can I print a different letter or several at once?
Yes. The maker on this page can build packs for any letters, like S, A, T, P, I, N, or the whole alphabet.
