About multi-digit addition
By grade 4, children use the standard algorithm to add any whole numbers, as the Common Core standards for grade 4 number and operations in base ten say (4.NBT.B.4). These 4 and 5 digit addition worksheets practice column addition, where regrouping can happen in several columns in a row.
How to add 4-digit numbers
Take 4,738 + 2,596:
- Ones: 8 + 6 = 14. Write 4, carry 1.
- Tens: 3 + 9 + 1 = 13. Write 3, carry 1.
- Hundreds: 7 + 5 + 1 = 13. Write 3, carry 1.
- Thousands: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. The answer is 7,334.
4 and 5 digit addition worksheets: how often does a problem carry?
The longer the numbers, the more carries a problem has. This table compares 3-digit, 4-digit and 5-digit addition, using exact counts of all the ordered pairs of numbers of each length. A carry is counted whenever a column, with the carry from the column to its right, adds up to 10 or more:
| Problem type | Pairs of numbers | No carrying | At least one carry | Carries per problem (average) | Answer has one more digit | A chain of 3 or more carries |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-digit + 3-digit | 810,000 | 13.4% | 86.6% | 1.55 | 60.4% | 16.2% |
| 4-digit + 4-digit | 81,000,000 | 7.4% | 92.6% | 2.05 | 60.5% | 22.5% |
| 5-digit + 5-digit | 8,100,000,000 | 4.1% | 95.9% | 2.55 | 60.5% | 29.3% |
Only 7% of 4-digit pairs have no carrying, and only 4% of 5-digit pairs. A 4 and 5 digit addition worksheet with random numbers therefore always practices regrouping. The average 5-digit problem has 2.5 carries, which is why 5-digit problems take longer than 4-digit ones.
4 digit addition worksheets: the number of carries
For 4 digit addition worksheets, the table below shows how the problems divide by the number of carries. Two or three carries are the most common, and a problem with four carries, where every column carries, happens in about one problem in 11:
| Carries | Pairs of 4-digit numbers | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 5,989,500 | 7.4% |
| 1 | 19,317,375 | 23.8% |
| 2 | 27,610,875 | 34.1% |
| 3 | 20,867,625 | 25.8% |
| 4 | 7,214,625 | 8.9% |
| All pairs | 81,000,000 | 100% |
5 digit addition worksheets: more carries, longer chains
With 5 digit addition worksheets, the carries go further. The same count for 5-digit numbers is below, and three or four carries are the most common:
| Carries | Pairs of 5-digit numbers | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 329,422,500 | 4.1% |
| 1 | 1,282,978,125 | 15.8% |
| 2 | 2,302,728,750 | 28.4% |
| 3 | 2,374,717,500 | 29.3% |
| 4 | 1,413,348,750 | 17.4% |
| 5 | 396,804,375 | 4.9% |
| All pairs | 8,100,000,000 | 100% |
A chain of three or more carries in a row happens in 29% of the 5-digit problems and in 23% of the 4-digit ones, so children need to be ready to pass a carry along several times. 60% of 5-digit sums have six digits.
Large number addition: when the carry runs through the nines
Large number addition is hardest when a carry meets a column that already adds up to nine. The carry turns that column to 10, and the carry passes on. These five problems have the longest chains:
| Problem | Carries | Answer | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,999 + 4,001 | 4 | 10,000 | every column carries, and the answer has a new leading 1 |
| 3,896 + 6,104 | 4 | 10,000 | every column carries, and the answer has a new leading 1 |
| 45,999 + 54,001 | 5 | 100,000 | every column carries, and the answer has a new leading 1 |
| 28,765 + 71,235 | 5 | 100,000 | every column carries, and the answer has a new leading 1 |
| 9,999 + 1 | 4 | 10,000 | every column carries, and the answer has a new leading 1 |
Multi digit addition worksheets: 20 practice problems with answers
These 20 problems are a fair sample of what the generator prints for 4 and 5 digit addition, ten of each length. The table shows the number of carries and the answer, with commas to separate the thousands:

| 75,333 + 81,086 | 2 | 156,419 |
4 and 5 digit addition: reading the numbers
Before children add large numbers, they should be able to read and write them. This table shows 4-digit and 5-digit numbers in words and in place value. The comma goes after the thousands, so that the digits are easy to read:
| Kind | Number | In words | In place value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-digit | 4,738 | four thousand seven hundred thirty-eight | 4 thousands, 7 hundreds, 3 tens, 8 ones |
| 4-digit | 9,999 | nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine | the largest 4-digit number |
| 5-digit | 24,391 | twenty-four thousand three hundred ninety-one | 2 ten thousands, 4 thousands, 3 hundreds, 9 tens, 1 one |
| 5-digit | 73,815 | seventy-three thousand eight hundred fifteen | 7 ten thousands, 3 thousands, 8 hundreds, 1 ten, 5 ones |
| 5-digit | 99,999 | ninety-nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine | the largest 5-digit number |
4 and 5 digit addition with partial sums
Some children find the partial sums method easier than carrying. They add each place separately, starting with the biggest, and then add the partial sums. For 4 and 5 digit addition this method is slower, but it shows exactly how the place values work, and it is the method that many textbooks teach before the standard algorithm:
| Problem | Partial sums, from the largest place | Add the partial sums |
|---|---|---|
| 4,738 + 2,596 | 4,000 + 2,000 = 6,000; 700 + 500 = 1,200; 30 + 90 = 120; 8 + 6 = 14 | 6,000 + 1,200 + 120 + 14 = 7,334 |
| 6,285 + 3,947 | 6,000 + 3,000 = 9,000; 200 + 900 = 1,100; 80 + 40 = 120; 5 + 7 = 12 | 9,000 + 1,100 + 120 + 12 = 10,232 |
| 18,462 + 25,379 | 10,000 + 20,000 = 30,000; 8,000 + 5,000 = 13,000; 400 + 300 = 700; 60 + 70 = 130; 2 + 9 = 11 | 30,000 + 13,000 + 700 + 130 + 11 = 43,841 |
| 50,429 + 38,976 | 50,000 + 30,000 = 80,000; 0 + 8,000 = 8,000; 400 + 900 = 1,300; 20 + 70 = 90; 9 + 6 = 15 | 80,000 + 8,000 + 1,300 + 90 + 15 = 89,405 |
4 and 5 digit addition with numbers of different lengths
When a 4-digit number is added to a 3-digit or 2-digit number, the main difficulty is to line up the places. The shorter number must start in the ones column, and the missing places can be filled in with zeros. The generator’s “4 digits and 3 digits” setting makes problems like these:
| Problem | How to line it up | Carries | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4,738 + 596 | 596 has 3 digits, so it starts under the hundreds column | 3 | 5,334 |
| 6,285 + 947 | 947 has 3 digits, so it starts under the hundreds column | 3 | 7,232 |
| 9,999 + 123 | 123 has 3 digits, so it starts under the hundreds column | 4 | 10,122 |
| 7,604 + 899 | 899 has 3 digits, so it starts under the hundreds column | 3 | 8,503 |
| 5,230 + 87 | 87 has 2 digits, so it starts under the tens column | 1 | 5,317 |
| 3,999 + 1,001 | 1,001 has 4 digits, so it starts under the thousands column | 3 | 5,000 |
Mental math for 4 and 5 digit addition
Not every 4 and 5 digit addition problem needs a column. When the numbers are round, children can add the thousands and then add the rest in their head. This table shows how:
| Problem | Mental step | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 3,000 + 4,200 | 3 thousands plus 4 thousands, then the rest (200) | 7,200 |
| 6,500 + 2,800 | 6 thousands plus 2 thousands, then the rest (1,300) | 9,300 |
| 12,000 + 15,500 | 12 thousands plus 15 thousands, then the rest (500) | 27,500 |
| 45,000 + 38,000 | 45 thousands plus 38 thousands, then the zeros stay | 83,000 |
| 2,999 + 1,000 | 2 thousands plus 1 thousands, then the rest (999) | 3,999 |
| 19,900 + 5,100 | 19 thousands plus 5 thousands, then the rest (1,000) | 25,000 |
4 digit addition with regrouping: how to check with casting out nines
A reliable check for 4 digit addition with regrouping is casting out nines. Add the digits of each number until one digit is left (the digit root), add the roots of the two numbers, and compare the result with the digit root of the answer. If they differ, the answer has a mistake. The check does not prove that an answer is right, but it catches most errors:
| Problem | Answer | Digit root of the first number | Digit root of the second | Digit root of the answer | Check: sum of the roots |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4,738 + 2,596 | 7,334 | 4 | 4 | 8 | 4 + 4 = 8, and the root is 8 |
| 6,285 + 3,947 | 10,232 | 3 | 5 | 8 | 3 + 5 = 8, and the root is 8 |
| 18,462 + 25,379 | 43,841 | 3 | 8 | 2 | 3 + 8 = 11, and the root is 2 |
| 73,815 + 9,267 | 83,082 | 6 | 6 | 3 | 6 + 6 = 12, and the root is 3 |
| 50,429 + 38,976 | 89,405 | 2 | 6 | 8 | 2 + 6 = 8, and the root is 8 |
| 24,391 + 67,048 | 91,439 | 1 | 7 | 8 | 1 + 7 = 8, and the root is 8 |
Estimating 4 and 5 digit addition
As with smaller numbers, an estimate is a quick check for 4 and 5 digit addition. Round each number to the nearest thousand and add:
| Problem | Round to the nearest thousand | Estimate | Exact answer | How far off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4,738 + 2,596 | 5,000 + 3,000 | 8,000 | 7,334 | 666 |
| 6,285 + 3,947 | 6,000 + 4,000 | 10,000 | 10,232 | 232 |
| 18,462 + 25,379 | 18,000 + 25,000 | 43,000 | 43,841 | 841 |
| 73,815 + 9,267 | 74,000 + 9,000 | 83,000 | 83,082 | 82 |
4 and 5 digit addition word problems
Large numbers appear in real situations such as the sizes of crowds, the length of trips and the numbers of things in a factory. These six word problems use numbers of 4 and 5 digits:
| Word problem | Number sentence | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| A stadium has 18,462 seats in the lower tier and 25,379 in the upper tier. How many seats does it have in all? | 18,462 + 25,379 = ? | 43,841 seats |
| A town has 4,738 houses in the north and 2,596 in the south. How many houses is that? | 4,738 + 2,596 = ? | 7,334 houses |
| A truck drives 6,285 kilometers in one trip and 3,947 kilometers in another. How far is that in all? | 6,285 + 3,947 = ? | 10,232 kilometers |
| A factory makes 50,429 bolts in May and 38,976 in June. How many bolts is that? | 50,429 + 38,976 = ? | 89,405 bolts |
| A library has 24,391 books and buys 1,609 more. How many books does it have now? | 24,391 + 1,609 = ? | 26,000 books |
| Two charities raise $73,815 and $9,267. How much do they raise together? | 73,815 + 9,267 = ? | 83,082 dollars |
Common mistakes in 4 and 5 digit addition
The mistakes in 4 and 5 digit addition are mostly about carrying and lining up. This table shows the wrong answers that come from two typical mistakes:
| Problem | Correct answer | Forgot one carry in the tens | Shifted the second number one column left |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4,738 + 2,596 | 7,334 | 7,324 | 30,698 |
| 6,285 + 3,947 | 10,232 | 10,222 | 45,755 |
| 18,462 + 25,379 | 43,841 | 43,831 | 272,252 |
A child who shifts the second number one column to the left has not lined up the places. Grid paper, with a box for every digit and a gap for the commas, prevents this.
Choosing the settings for 4 and 5 digit addition worksheets
The generator has settings for each kind of 4 and 5 digit addition practice. This table shows what each setting prints and who it suits:
| Generator setting | What it prints | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Digits: 4 and 4 | Column addition of two 4-digit numbers | Grade 4 (4.NBT.B.4) |
| Digits: 5 and 5 | Longer carries and answers up to 199,998 | Grades 4 and 5 |
| Digits: 4 and 3 | Lining up numbers of different lengths | Grade 4 |
| Regrouping: every problem | Every problem has at least one carry | Practice the carry |
| Regrouping: none | No carrying at all | A first look at the big numbers |
| Grid paper layout | Every digit in its own box | Children who write unevenly |
How 4 and 5 digit addition is taught from grade 3 to grade 5
In grade 3, children add within 1,000 and get ready for bigger numbers, and many classes begin 4-digit addition at the end of the year. In grade 4, the standard says that children should add multi-digit whole numbers fluently with the standard algorithm, and the 4 and 5 digit addition worksheets on this page are aimed at this skill. In grade 5, children use the same method with decimals, so the habits they learn here, such as lining up the places and writing the carries, matter for years to come.
A place value chart for 4 and 5 digit addition
A place value chart is the best tool for a child who loses track of the columns. Draw five boxes labeled ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and ones, and write one digit in each box. Add the boxes from right to left, and write any carry above the next box. After a few days, most children no longer need the chart, but they keep the habit of working one place at a time. The place value chart tool prints a blank chart for this.
Helping at home with 4 and 5 digit addition
Parents can help with 4 and 5 digit addition without being experts. These suggestions work well:
- Ask for an estimate first. “About how much do you think it is?” helps the child to see whether an answer is sensible.
- Let the child explain a carry. If they can say why the 1 goes above the next column, they understand the method.
- Use real numbers. Add the prices on a shopping list, the distances on a map or the scores in a game, using numbers of 4 and 5 digits.
- Keep sessions short. Ten problems with full attention are better than thirty in a hurry.
- Use the answer key last. A child who checks with casting out nines before looking at the key learns to find their own mistakes.
A five-day plan for 4 and 5 digit addition
Most children in grades 4 and 5 need about a week to become fluent in 4 and 5 digit addition. This plan moves from reading the numbers to word problems. When children are secure, they can return to 3-digit addition for review, or go on to the multiplication worksheets:
| Day | What to do | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Review place value and read 4-digit and 5-digit numbers with commas | 10 numbers |
| Day 2 | 4 and 5 digit addition without regrouping | 10 problems |
| Day 3 | 4-digit addition with regrouping, one carry at a time | 12 problems |
| Day 4 | 5-digit addition with long carries | 10 problems |
| Day 5 | Estimate, add and check with casting out nines, and word problems | 6 word problems |
Tips
- Estimate to the nearest thousand first: 5,000 + 3,000 = 8,000, so 7,334 is reasonable.
- Grid paper keeps long numbers lined up; our grid paper worksheet does this for you.
- Check by adding the numbers again in the other order.
How big can the answer be in 4 and 5 digit addition?
Adding two four-digit numbers gives at most 19,998, and two five-digit numbers at most 199,998, so the answer can have one more digit than the numbers you started with. The table shows the range and the largest number of carries:
| Problem | Smallest sum | Largest sum | Most carries possible |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-digit + 4-digit | 2,000 | 19,998 | 4 |
| 5-digit + 5-digit | 20,000 | 199,998 | 5 |
| 4-digit + 5-digit | 11,000 | 109,998 | 5 |
The most carries happen with numbers like 9,999 + 9,999, where every column carries. When you check an answer, a quick estimate (round both numbers to the nearest thousand) catches most place value slips.
Frequently asked questions
7 quick answers
What grade learns 4-digit addition?
Grade 4 is expected to add multi-digit whole numbers fluently with the standard algorithm; many classes start 4-digit addition in grade 3.
Are there answer keys?
Yes, on the last page of each worksheet PDF.
What is the biggest answer to a 4 and 5 digit addition problem?
Two 5-digit numbers add up to at most 199,998 (99,999 + 99,999), and two 4-digit numbers to at most 19,998. In both cases the answer has one more digit than the numbers.
How should children line up 4 and 5 digit addition problems?
Write the ones under the ones, the tens under the tens, and so on, and keep the commas in a straight line. If one number is longer, the shorter one starts from the right. Grid paper makes this easy.
Can children use a calculator for 4 and 5 digit addition?
The worksheets are for practicing the written method. A calculator is useful for checking an answer afterwards, but a child should do the work first, and then use an estimate or casting out nines to check.
Where can I download free 4 and 5 digit addition worksheets?
Open any worksheet in the gallery above, choose US Letter or A4, then print or save the PDF. They are free and each has an answer key.
How many digits can the answer to 5-digit addition have?
Adding two 5-digit numbers gives a 5-digit or 6-digit answer. The largest possible sum is 99,999 + 99,999 = 199,998.
