Cut and paste activities by age

Match the cut and paste worksheets to your child’s age and scissor skills:

Age What they can do Good sheets
2 to 3 year olds (toddlers) Snip strips with safety scissors and stick pre-cut pieces with a glue stick Big or small, sort by color (cut the pieces out for them)
4 year olds (preschool) Cut along straight dashed lines with help Farm or wild, animal homes with pictures
5 year olds (kindergarten, grade R) Cut out squares on their own and read simple labels Living or nonliving, fruits or vegetables, uppercase and lowercase
6 year olds (1st grade, class 1) Sort words, put numbers and days in order Beginning sounds, addition, days of the week
7 to 9 year olds (2nd and 3rd grade) Work faster with less help, check their own answers Months, even or odd, multiplication, states of matter

Why use cut and paste worksheets?

  • Scissor skills: cutting on dashed lines builds hand strength and control for writing.
  • Hands-on thinking: children can move pieces around and change their minds before gluing.
  • Calm focus: a clear start and finish keeps young learners on task.

Every word list was chosen so each piece belongs to exactly one group. For example, animals that live both on land and in water are left out of the animal homes sort.

Tips for smooth cutting and gluing

A few habits make cut and paste worksheets far less messy:

  • Print on ordinary paper for younger children; card is harder to cut.
  • Cut the strip of pieces off the page first, so small hands deal with less paper at once.
  • Lay all the pieces in their groups before any glue comes out, then check against the answer key.
  • Glue sticks are less messy than liquid glue for 2 to 4 year olds.
  • Always use child-safe scissors and stay close by while toddlers cut.

2 to 3 Snips paper with help Sort big and small pictures, then stick them down
3 to 4 Cuts along a straight line Sort by color, farm or wild animals
4 to 5 Cuts curves and simple shapes Beginning sounds, numbers in order

6 to 8 Cuts neatly and quickly Even or odd, months in order, multiplication facts

Cut and paste number worksheets and letters cut and paste

For cut and paste number worksheets, use the put in order activity (numbers, and skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s) and the cut and paste addition and multiplication facts sheets. For letters cut and paste, use the match activity for uppercase and lowercase letters, the ABC order sheet and the beginning sounds sort. Children cut out the pieces, put them in the right place and then glue them down, which practices fine motor skills and the math or reading skill at the same time.

8 quick answers

Which cut and paste worksheets for kindergarten should I start with?

Sorting by color or size, then simple sequencing with three pictures. Turn on pictures so children who cannot read yet can still sort.

Yes. Cutting along a line and gluing pieces in place strengthen the same hand muscles children need for writing.

What age are cut and paste worksheets for?

With help and safety scissors, children can start at about 2 to 3 years old using the picture sheets. Sorting and matching suit ages 4 to 7, and months and multiplication suit ages 7 to 9.

Yes. Switch on Pictures in the generator, or download the picture sheets above: big or small animals, sort by color, farm or wild, animal homes, fruits or vegetables and living or nonliving.
